Prep basketball roundup: Kennewick girls top Hanford 52-35
Bianca Chavez might have had the game of her life in Tuesday night’s Class 3A girls basketball district loser-out contest against Hanford.
The Kennewick High School senior finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead the host Lions in their 52-35 victory.
“I don’t think she’s ever scored 20 points,” Kennewick coach Ashley Williams said. “Everything was just opening up for her, and almost all of hers were layups or driving right down the middle and no one stopping her. I’m so proud. She’s a great, hard worker, and I’m happy she had such a great game tonight.”
Jayln Norwood went 7-for-10 from the free-throw line and scored 15 points for Kennewick (7-13), which will play at Southridge (10-9) on Friday night. The winner will advance to Saturday’s district title game at Kamiakin (10-10).
Timmary Downard scored 11 points for Hanford (1-20), while Emily Beattie had 10.
“The thing I like about Hanford is they’re gutsy like we are,” Williams said. “They just play really hard the whole entire game, no matter what the score is, and I think their coach should be very proud, and the people at Hanford should be proud. They might not win all their games, but they definitely try all the way till the end and give it their all.”
