Kamiakin girls claim top seed to 3A district
Kendyl Holle scored all 12 of her points on 3-pointers in the first half as the Kamiakin Braves got out to a 21-point lead in the first half and beat the Southridge Suns 62-33 on Monday night to claim the No. 1 seed to the Mid-Columbia Conference Class 3A girls basketball tournament.
Southridge (10-10) takes the No. 2 seed and will host the winner of tonight’s first-round game between Hanford (1-19) and Kennewick (6-13). The Braves (11-10) will play the winner in Saturday’s championship game at 5:30 p.m., with a boys game to follow at 7.
Along with the No. 1 seed, Monday’s win also gives Kamiakin a free pass into the MCC/Greater Spokane League sub-regional.
Alexa Hazel led a balanced Braves attack with 13 points. Kiley Larsen scored 10 points, Oumou Toure nine.
Shyler Sullivan and Ari McKenzie each scored six points to top the Suns’ effort.
District basketball gets into full swing today with four elimination games in the MCC ranks.
In Class 4A, the Chiawana boys (11-9) host Pasco (2-18) at 6 p.m., while the Walla Walla girls (11-9) entertain the Bulldogs (4-16), also at 6. The Chiawana-Pasco winner faces another elimination game Friday at Walla Walla (13-7). The winner of the girls game plays at Richland (16-4).
In the 3A ranks, Hanford plays a doubleheader at Kennewick, with the girls tipping at 5:45 p.m. and the boys at 7:30 in elimination games. The winner between the Kennewick (10-10) and Hanford (5-15) boys plays at Southridge (10-10) on Friday.
The winner of Friday’s games secure a berth into the MCC/Greater Spokane League sub-regional and play in Saturday’s district championships.
The SCAC district boys tournament tips off with a series of East-West crossover games tonight: Royal at La Salle, Granger at Connell, Naches Valley at Kiona-Benton and Columbia-Burbank at Zillah. All games start at 7 p.m. The girls first-round games are Thursday, with all teams advancing to Saturday’s second round.
The Prosser boys are the only local CWAC team to qualify for the postseason. They host Toppenish at 7 p.m. today.
The Southeast 2B also tips tonight. On the boys side, Waitsburg plays at Asotin and Walla Walla Valley Academy is at DeSales. For the girls, Asotin/Tri-Cities Prep travels to DeSales, and WWVA is at Dayton. All games start at 6 p.m.
The Southeast 1B girls begin on Wednesday: Liberty Christian at St. John-Endicott and Oakesdale at Pomeroy. The boys start in Thursday: Touchet at Pomeroy and Oakesdale at Colton. All games start at 6 p.m.

Girls wrestling
The Othello Huskies held off Warden to win the District 5-6-7-8 girls wrestling sub-regional Saturday.
Iyalhye Barraza won the title at 120 pounds with an 8-1 victory over Kiona-Benton’s Maria Mondgragon. Yoshi Gutierrez (135) and Kaylee Martinez (140) also won titles.
Martinez defeated Ki-Be’s Maria Enriquez with an 18-3 technical fall.
Othello’s Elizabeth Giles (125), Nikki Velazquez (130) and Heather Fitting (155) finished second.
Ki-Be’s Elsa Gonzalez won the 155 title when Fitting injury defaulted. The Bears finished fourth.
