Girls basketball roundup: Chiawana, Wa-Hi notch MCC wins

Braydey Hodgins led the Chiawana Riverhawks on Tuesday night with 22 points in a 62-53 win over the Kamiakin Braves, but teammate Adelina Guzman had a hot hand from behind the arc.

Guzman made seven 3-pointers and finished with 21 points as Chiawana improved to 17-2 overall and 12-0 in the Mid-Columbia Conference with a close win over host Kamiakin (10-9, 7-6).

Hodgins went 12-of-14 from the free-throw line for the Riverhawks, who led by two at halftime and four at the end of the third quarter.

Kamiakin’s Alexa Hazel finished with 13 points, while fellow freshman Oumou Toure had 12. But the Braves struggled to make their free throws, going 3-of-12 for the game.

WALLA WALLA 58, SOUTHRIDGE 48: Kate Hogan had 22 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks as the Blue Devils (10-9, 8-5 MCC) defeated the Suns in Kennewick.

Meghan Yenney contributed 16 points for Walla Walla, while Faith Hoe had 11.

Shyler Sullivan scored a team-high 18 points for Southridge (9-9, 6-7). Ellie Smith had a solid all-around game, finishing with 10 points, eight rebounds, four blocks and three assists.

“We had a good fourth quarter,” Suns coach Mike Conner said. “We came back; we just couldn’t get over the hump.”

RICHLAND 57, KENNEWICK 45: Maysun Wellsandt had 15 points, and Hailey Stevens scored 13 to lead the Bombers (15-3, 10-2 MCC) past the host Lions.

Richland had a one-point lead entering the fourth quarter, then outscored Kennewick 21-10 the rest of the way.

“Last time we had a running clock at halftime — we were down 40 at halftime,” Lions coach Ashley Williams said. “We feel good about tonight.”

Kennewick (6-12, 5-8 MCC) got 15 points from Aspen Fiander, and Gabby Clinton contributed 13 points and 12 rebounds.

PASCO 55, HANFORD 48: Bella Gutierrez scored a game-high 22 points, while Jalayne Martinez had 12 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs to an MCC road win over the Falcons.

Pasco (4-15, 3-10) rallied in the fourth quarter, going 7-of-8 from the free-throw line.

“That kind of put the game out of reach for us,” Hanford coach Evan Woodward said. “The girls fought hard the whole time. I’m very proud of them.”

Malea Dye had 16 points for Hanford (1-18, 0-13), while Emily Beattie scored 12. Timmary Downard grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.
