Mid-Columbia boys basketball roundup for Jan. 22: Pasco earns first MCC win of season

PASCO 63, KENNEWICK 59: The Bulldogs rallied from a 27-17 halftime deficit to knock off the visiting Lions for their first MCC win of the season.

“It was a great win for our kids,” Pasco coach Mike Guajardo said. “In the second half, our kids got some good looks, hit some shots, the defense picked up, and emotionally they got into the game. Kennewick went through a stretch where they didn’t shoot the ball well, and we took advantage of it.”

Kashon Tate led the Bulldogs (1-8 MCC) with 17 points, while Emilio Davila added 16 points and Sebastian Gutierrez 12 points and 12 rebounds.

“Gutierrez was a horse,” Guajardo said.

Nico Benavidez had 17 points for the Lions (5-4), who also got 14 points and 10 rebounds apiece from Kafaya Bugal and Sam Szendre.

CHIAWANA 61, HANFORD 59: Jalen King stepped to the line with 2.2 seconds to play and hit two free throws to lead the Riverhawks to an MCC road win over the Falcons.

“Both teams fought hard,” Chiawana coach Chad Herron said. “It came down to who had the ball last.”

Andrey Voloshin led the Riverhawks with 27 points, while King added 21 points and 16 rebounds.

Jacob Sivonen had 22 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots for the Falcons.

RICHLAND 63, WALLA WALLA 52: Steven Beo had 27 points and 10 rebounds as the Bombers defeated the Blue Devils in Walla Walla.

Jared Funk and Noah Porter each scored 10 points for Walla Walla, which outscored Richland 17-12 in the final quarter.

“We didn’t play great in the fourth quarter, and let them back in it,” Richland coach Earl Streufert said. “But a good road win for us. We go to 8-0 (in the MCC).”

TOPPENISH 67, GRANDVIEW 47: Gunner Chronis scored a game-high 23 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Greyhounds dropped a CWAC road game to the Wildcats.

“Toppenish played with a fire and passion that we did not, and from the tip they controlled the tempo of the game,” Grandview coach Glenn Braman said.

Isaiah Perez and Adonis Shaul each had 15 points for the Wildcats.
