Kennewick gets clutch play in MCC win

Simplicio Hernandez hit a 3-pointer with less than 10 seconds to play, and Samuel Szendre hit both ends of a one-and-one a few seconds later as Kennewick rallied to beat Walla Walla 73-70 on Saturday at the Lions Den.

“Walla Walla is such a great program,” Lions coach Bradyn Leyde said. “For us to hang in there shows a lot of guts from our kids.”

Kennewick trailed 21-10 after the first quarter, but got back in the game as Kafaya Bugal scored 10 of his team-high 24 points in the second quarter.

“He did a great job getting to the rim and attacking,” Leyde said of Bugal. “He picked the energy up for us.”

Hernandez hit a 3 to put us up by one with 8.4 seconds remaining. We defended, got a rebound and Sendre hit both ends of a one-and-one and he knocked them down for us.

They are really god. WW is scuh a grat program, for us to hang in there show a lot of guys from out kids.

Bugal did a gret jonb getting to the rim and attacking . he oicked the nergy up. 10 points in the second quarter.

RICHLAND 82, KENNEWICK 65: Steven Beo and Landon Radliff combined for 56 points, and Tyler Kurtz chipped in 14 points and 15 rebounds to lift the Bombers to an MCC home win over the Lions on Friday night.

Kennewick had four players in double figures, led by Kafaya Bugal and Saul Nieves, who scored 14 points apiece. Samuel Szendre and Nico Benavidez added 13 points apiece for the Lions, who led 45-44 at halftime.

Richland held Kennewick to just 31 percent (10-for-32) shooting in the second half and forced 15 turnovers. Radliff drained six 3-pointers as the Bombers shot 12-for-22 from behind the arc.

SOUTHRIDGE 44, WALLA WALLA 41: Gabe Vorheis led all scorers with 22 points and hit a pair of free throws in the final minute to help ice the Suns’ MCC road win over the Blue Devils on Friday night.

“The goal coming into the weekend was to keep pace with the rest of the league. If Kamiakin won, we would stay a game back (they lost to Chiawana on Friday). Now, we’re tied at 4-3,” Southridge coach D.J. Traver said.

The Suns had to make a late charge, trailing 41-38 with 2 minutes remaining. But they made some key stops on defense, and Chad Crider tipped in a Vorheis miss to put Southridge up 42-41 in the final minute.

“It wasn’t one person in particular. Everybody bought in,” Traver said.

Mitch Lesmeister led the Blue Devils with 13 points.
