With a delicious blend of quickness, size and shooting ability, the Chiawana Riverhawks resemble a team that could take the Mid-Columbia Conference by storm.

First, they have to get past Richland, a team that has won the last three MCC titles and reached the Class 4A state tournament each of the last three seasons. They’ll get their chance at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, when Chiawana (5-1, 1-0 MCC) plays host to the Bombers (4-2, 1-0) at 7:30 p.m.

“So far so good. We’ll see what happens Tuesday,” Riverhawks coach Chad Herron said after his team’s 90-71 win over Hanford on Saturday. “I really liked the way we shared the ball with one another. We did a much better job of blocking out tonight and kept our turnovers in single digits.”

Chandler Hansen, Chiawana’s 6-foot-6 senior forward, had a monster night, hitting 9 of 12 shots from the 3-point arc for a game-high 29 points. Jalen King, a 6-10 junior post, added 12 points, 20 rebounds and seven blocks.

The Riverhawks took command early, jumping out to a 22-12 first-quarter lead and built that to 48-28 at the half.

Jacob Sivonen led Hanford with 23 points and seven rebounds.

Steven Beo netted 33 for Richland, but only one other Bomber — Landon Radliff (17 points) —broke double figures.

“We didn’t come out ready to play. We just weren’t ready. Emotionally, we weren’t ready to go,” Richland coach Earl Streufert said. “We turned it around after halftime and got it cut to 6. We had our chances. We just couldn’t get over the hump.”

Streufert noted the contribution of senior forward Brecken Galliher, who had six points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal in just under 14 minutes.

“Brecken is the guy that turned the game around. He gave us chances to score,” Streufert said. “He and Paxton Stevens and Cody Sanderson all came in and defended really well in the second half.”
