  • Lynden completes 27-0 season and third straight 2A state title by controlling rebounds

The Prosser Mustangs just couldn’t get started in the first quarter of Saturday’s Class 2A girls high school basketball championship game in the Yakima Valley SunDome.

Lynden jumped out to a 19-3 first quarter lead and never looked back, as the Lions won the state title 59-49.

Prosser finished second at state. It was the third time in school history that Prosser placed second at state.

“I’m very proud of the girls,” said Prosser coach Jessica Huntington. “We just couldn’t get anything going in that first quarter, and then we played them even the rest of the way.”

The Mustangs have won state titles in both 1989 and 2011.

Meanwhile, the Lynden Lions, which finished the season at 27-0, have now won three consecutive 2A state titles.

“Their length really bothered us,” said Huntington.

Senior Deidra Phillips added 13 points and 4 assists, while Amelia Chapman had 10 points.

“We graduate two seniors, and the rest of the team is returning,” said Huntington. “I knew last summer we could have something special.”
