The Kamiakin boys have gone 1-1 at the WIAA state 3A boys basketball tournament this week in the Tacoma Dome, and were playing next for the fourth-place trophy.

The Braves lost 58-53 to Rainier Beach in the Thursday quarterfinal round, but rallied on Friday morning to eliminate Seattle Prep 72-63.

Against Rainier Beach, the game was tight through the first two quarters, with the Braves leading 28-27 at intermission.

But the Braves started to pull away in the third quarter, and they held a 47-40 lead after three quarters.

Rainier Beach, however, outscored Kamiakin 18-6 in the fourth quarter to pull away and win.

John Hart led Rainier Beach with 22 points.

Kyson Rose led Kamiakin with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Messiah Jones had 12 points and 7 boards, and Trey Arland added 10 points.

Against Seattle Prep, Kamiakin shot a sizzling 60 percent from the floor (24 for 40) for the game.

Steven Westermeyer added 12 points for the Braves, while Arland had 11.

Kyle Carlesimo paced Prep with 13 points.

Warden girls split first two games

No. 3-seeded Warden opened the 1A state tournament in Yakima on Thursday night with a 47-40 loss to Freeman in the quarterfinals.

Warden never led in the game.

Rylee McKay led the Cougars with 13 points and 6 rebounds, while Kiana Rios added 9 points and 7 rebounds.

Warden’s defensive pressure worked well, forcing 23 Freeman turnovers that were turned into 20 points. But Freeman dominated the boards, out rebounding the Cougars 50-33.

Anna Chisholm led Freeman with 16 points.

On Friday afternoon, though, Warden bounced back and beat SCAC rival Zillah 65-49 in an elimination game.

The Cougars jumped out to a 14-5 first-quarter lead and never looked back, and never trailed in the contest — leading by as much as 31 points.

Jaryn Madsen led Warden with 23 points and 5 rebounds, while teammate Kaya Enriquez had 10 points.

Brynn Widner led Zillah with 12 points.

Warden played Annie Wright on Saturday in the fourth-place/sixth-place trophy game.

Burbank, Prep girls to play for fourth

The Columbia-Burbank and Tri-Cities Prep girls basketball teams played Saturday in the Spokane Arena for fourth place at the WIAA state 2B tournament.

Both teams lost their quarterfinal matchups on Thursday, but bounced back on Friday in loser-out contests to get to the trophy round.

Burbank beat Ilwaco 66-45 on Friday, as Jennifer Jacobo led the Coyotes with 27 points. Teammate Serenity Kinsey added 16 points, while Jadyn Johnson had 14 points and 7 rebounds.

Erika Glenn led Ilwaco with 19 points and 6 assists.

For Prep, the defending state champions ran into a buzzsaw on Thursday in the quarterfinals, losing to La Conner 69-27.

The Jaguars were just too cold in the shooting department, going just 10-for-53 for 18 percent from the floor.

McKenna Martinez led Prep with 9 points and 4 steals.

Morgan Herrera led La Conner with 15 points.

But on Friday, the Jaguars erased the memory of Thursday’s loss and knocked Toledo out of the tournament with a 44-39 victory.

Trailing 33-27 after three quarters, Prep exploded with a 17-6 fourth quarter run to win.

Martinez led the Jags with 14 points, while Hannah Chang added 13 points and 8 rebounds.
