Chiawana girls lose state 4A basketball tournament opener

The Chiawana girls basketball team lost its state 4A quarterfinal matchup Thursday morning in the Tacoma Dome, falling to Glacier Peak 62-57.

That means the Riverhawks can’t win the state championship, but they can still earn a fourth-place trophy.

Chiawana will take on Todd Beamer at 9 a.m. Friday in a loser-out game.

In Thursday’s contest against Glacier Peak, the Riverhawks shot just 27 percent from the floor in the first half, trailed 23-18 at intermission, and could never catch the Grizzlies.

Maya Erling led Glacier Peak with 23 points, and had 6 assists.

Kylie Thorne led Chiawana with 18 points and 8 rebounds. Talia von Oelhoffen added 15 points and 6 rebounds, while Delaney Pink had 12 points.

Alyssa Agundis added 10 rebounds for Chiawana.

In another game, the Rainier Beach defeated the Kamiakin boys, 58-53, in the 3A state tournament Thursday afternoon. More details were not immediately available.

Other state tournament results:

GARFIELD GIRLS 62, KENNEWICK 49: The Lions fell behind 25-20 by halftime and could never recover in the Class 3A tournament in a loser-out game on Wednesday night in the Tacoma Dome.

Garfield outrebounded Kennewick 43-33, and the Bulldogs were led by Sahcari Davis with 19 points and 7 rebounds.

Kennewick was paced by junior Madeline Gebers, who had 20 points and 8 rebounds. Senior MeiLani McBee added 13 points for the Lions, who finished the season with an 18-6 record.

TOPPENISH BOYS 64, PROSSER 60: Isaac Perez scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to help lead Toppenish over Prosser in the state 2A tournament in the Yakima Valley SunDome in a loser-out, first-round game on Wednesday night.

The loss ended the Mustangs’ season with a 19-8 record.

It was the fourth time these two CWAC teams played each other, with the Wildcats taking three victories.

In Wednesday’s game, there were 17 lead changes, but a key stat was that Toppenish outscored Prosser 26-14 in points off of turnovers.

Haden Hicks led the Mustangs with 21 points and 9 rebounds, while teammate Calvin Maljaars added 10 points and 7 boards.

KING’S BOYS 76, RIVER VIEW 41: The River View boys ran into a buzz saw Thursday morning at the 1A state tournament in the Yakima Valley SunDome, losing to a hot King’s team.

The Knights ran away in the quarterfinal game early, leading the Panthers 24-7 after one quarter, and 43-14 by halftime.

Tyler Linhardt had 26 points and 9 rebounds to lead King’s, while teammate Jordan Hanson added 22.

William Bailey paced River View with 12 points and 5 rebounds.

The Panthers are still alive in the tournament, although they cannot win the state title. River View can get fourth place, and it will play King’s Way Christian at 9 a.m. Friday.

COLUMBIA-BURBANK GIRLS GO 1-1: The Coyotes won their state 2B tournament opener on Wednesday in the Spokane Arena, beating Mossyrock 50-40 in a first-round, loser-out game.

That allowed Columbia-Burbank to continue into the modified, double-elimination portion of the tournament.

Burbank trailed 22-18 at halftime, but came out hot in the second half for the loser-out victory, outscoring Mossyrock 32-18 in the final two quarters.

Jadyn Johnson led the way for Burbank with 15 points and 5 rebounds, while teammate Jennifer Jacobo added 14 points.

On Thursday, though, the Coyotes lost to top-seeded Liberty of Spangle 69-36 in the quarterfinals. No details were available by deadline.

Columbia-Burbank will play Ilwaco in a loser-out game at 9 a.m. Friday.

TRI-CITIES PREP 56, SAINT GEORGE’S 47: McKenna Martinez scored a game-high 21 points, Emily Dickson added 12 points and 8 rebounds, and Alyssa Montean scored 12 points as defending state 2B champion Tri-Cities Prep advanced to the quarterfinals with a win over Saint George’s.

Prep he took control late in the game by outscoring Saint George’s 18-13 in the final quarter.

Annika Bergquist led Saint George’s with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

The Jaguars advanced to Thursday’s quarterfinals, playing La Conner.
