WIAA moves regional basketball games due to Snohomish County coronavirus case

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) is officially moving state tournament regional round basketball games from Jackson High School (Mill Creek) to Shorewood, after a Jackson High School student tested positive for coronavirus.

“Due to the recent closure of Jackson High School, the WIAA Regional basketball games scheduled to be played at the facility on Saturday, February 29 will now be played at Shorewood High School,” the WIAA said in a statement on Friday. “All game times will remain as originally scheduled. WIAA Staff have been in communication with the Washington Department of Health and will continue to receive guidance in order to ensure the safety of those involved with WIAA state events.”

The Jackson case was one of two new COVID-19 cases identified in Washington. The high school student had no known exposure to the disease. The school will be closed and sanitized.

The student had not traveled recently, and authorities were unsure how that person contracted the disease, officially known as COVID-19.

“It is concerning that this individual didn’t travel and acquired it in the community,” said Dr. Chris Spitters of the Snohomish County Health District. “Officials are investigating to determine who the teen may have come into contact with.”
