10 Mid-Columbia basketball teams head to playoffs. Some games will be in Richland
Ten Mid-Columbia high school basketball teams got their state regional assignments from the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association late Sunday afternoon, scattering the teams all over the state.
The schedule will include a quadruple header at Art Dawald Gymnasium in Richland on Saturday, Feb. 29.
The Dawald schedule opens with the River View boys playing Bellevue Christian at 12 p.m.
River View is seeded fourth, while Bellevue Christian is fifth, which means both teams will be playing next week in the 1A state tournament in Yakima.
The winner would get a bye to the second round on Thursday, March 5, while the loser has to play in a loser-out contest on Wednesday, March 4.
The second game at Dawald involves a 1B girls game between Wellpinit and Pomeroy, set for 2 p.m.
At 4 p.m. Saturday at Dawald, the No. 10-seeded Prosser boys take one No. 15 Clover Park in a Class 2A loser-out game, with the winner advancing to Yakima on Wednesday, March 4.
The final game Saturday at Dawald is a Class 4A girls matchup between No. 4 seed Chiawana and No. 5 Kentridge, set for 6 p.m.
The winner will get a bye to Thursday, March 5, in Tacoma, while the loser will play in a first-round, loser-out game in the Tacoma Dome on Wednesday, March 4.
Here are the other area matchups (all state tournaments run March 4-7):
▪ The Kamiakin boys, who beat Mt. Spokane 55-52 on Friday night in the District 8 championship in the Toyota Center, will head to Jackson High School in Everett. The Braves, seeded No. 6 in Class 3A, will play No. 3 seed Marysville-Pilchuck at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, in Everett.
The winner gets a bye to Thursday, March 5, in the Tacoma Dome, while the loser will play in a loser-out game on Wednesday, March 4, in Tacoma.
▪ The Kennewick girls are seeded No. 8 in Class 3A girls, which means they’ll be going to Tacoma also.
The Lions will play No. 1 seed Eastside Catholic at 12 p.m. Saturday at Sammamish High School.Winner gets the bye to Thursday, March 5, in Tacoma; loser plays a loser-out game on Wednesday, March 4, in Tacoma.
▪ In Class 4A girls, Sunnyside qualified as the No. 15 seed, and will play No. 10-seeded Bellarmine Prep at 6 p.m. Saturday at Rogers High School in Puyallup.
The game is a loser-out contest, and the winner advances to Tacoma to open the tournament Wednesday, March 4, in a loser-out game.
▪ Warden’s girls was the only Class 1A girls team to qualify, and the Cougars are a No. 3 seed.
They’ll take on No. 6 seed King’s at 12 p.m. Saturday at Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake.Win or lose, Warden still qualifies to play next week in the Yakima Valley SunDome.
A Saturday win would mean the Cougars get a bye to the second round next Thursday, March 5. A loss, and Warden will open in the first round on Wednesday, March 4.
▪ The Columbia-Burbank girls are seeded No. 7 in the State 2B tournament. The Coyotes will play No. 2 La Conner at 4 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Vernon.A win gives Columbia-Burbank a bye into the state tournament in Spokane; a loss means the Coyotes play in Spokane on Wednesday, March 4, in the first round of the state tourney.
▪ The Tri-Cities Prep girls are a No. 8 seed in 2B girls, and they’ll play top-seeded Liberty of Spangle at 4 p.m. Saturday. The game is at West Valley High School in Spokane.Like Columbia-Burbank, Tri-Cities Prep will be playing next week in Spokane.
The defending 2B state champion Jaguars would get a bye to Thursday, March 5, if they win this coming Saturday; a first-round, loser-out contest on Wednesday, March 4, if they lose on Saturday.
▪ The Sunnyside Christian boys qualified for the Class 1B tournament, and are seeded No. 15 in the state regionals.
They’ll play No. 10 Almira-Coulee-Hartline at 8 p.m., this Friday at Wenatchee High School. It’s a loser-out game, so the winner would qualify for the 1B state tournament that begins in Spokane on March 4.
