Kennewick High School named Lenny Ayers as its baseball coach. Ayers replaces AJ Marquardt who recently resigned.
Ayers, who is a Kennewick High School graduate, will be the third baseball coach at Kennewick High School in the past 45 years. He will continue in his current position as the head freshman football coach.
Marquardt spent 14 years as the head coach of the Lions and led his teams to multiple league and district championships. His 2008 team won the 3A state championship. He resigned to spend more time with his young family but will continue to teach physical education at Kennewick High School.
“We will certainly miss AJ on the baseball field where he has mentored so many of our student-athletes,” Kennewick Principal Ron King said. “AJ is also an excellent PE teacher and his influence on our students and student-athletes will remain strong.”

Marquardt replaced long-time Lions coach Dean Hoff in 2001.
“AJ had to replace a pillar of the baseball community 15 years ago and then became one himself,” King said. “Now it’s time for Coach Ayers to step in. He is well aware of the traditions at Kennewick High School, having played for Hoff and served as AJ’s assistant coach.”
