Mid-Columbia roundup for May 20: Umatilla’s Cardenas wins Oregon track titles

TRACK AND FIELD

OREGON STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS: Umatilla senior Fabian Cardenas won his third consecutive Class 3A boys 3,000-meter title, blowing away the field Thursday in a personal-best 8 minutes, 30.23 seconds to break his meet record by 11 seconds at Hayward Field in Eugene.

The second-place runner, Luca Ostertag-Hill of Catlin Gabel, finished 37 seconds behind Cardenas.

Friday in the 1,500 meters, Cardenas successfully defended his title, turning in a personal-best time of 3:58.64 — 11 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Hassan Ibrahim of Jefferson.

In the 5A boys shot put, Hermiston’s Tre Neal placed third with a throw of 56 feet, 7 inches. Neal also placed fourth in the discus with a mark of 169-0.

MCC/GSL REGIONALS: With their performances at Richland High School, Kamiakin’s Allison Stapleton (first place, girls long jump), Wyatt Musser (second, boys discus), Darreon Moore (second, boys long jump), Phillip Fishburn (second, boys 3,200) and the Braves’ 4x100-meter boys and girls relays advanced to next week’s Class 3A state championships in Tacoma.

Southridge’s 4x100 girls relay tied with Kamiakin for first at 49.96 seconds.

Hanford’s Morgan Rasmussen (first, 3A girls high jump), Kara Shibley (first, girls shot put), Mikal Sanchez (second, girls long jump) and Hailey Cleavenger (second, girls 3,200) also earned spots in next week’s state championships.

Chiawana’s Roman Ruiz won the 4A boys pole vault with a mark of 15 feet, while Walla Walla’s Mitchell Jacobson took the long jump (22-2.75).

The 3A and 4A state championships will be at Mt. Tahoma High School.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Bellevue (Neb.) University, featuring former Hanford players Jake Browne and Trevor Jones, beat host Davenport 7-2 to win the NAIA Opening Round Grand Rapids (Mich.) bracket title.

Bellevue (51-10) advances to the Avista-NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho. The Bruins will open the tournament at 3 p.m. next Friday against Auburn-Montgomery.

Defending World Series champion and tournament host Lewis-Clark State (48-7) will play at 7 p.m. next Friday against the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.

Bryce Jackson (Southridge), Quin Grogan (Stanfield), Gunnar Buhner and Hayden Meier (CBC), and J.J. Robinson (Walla Walla CC) are on the Lewis-Clark State roster.

▪ Colin Serkowski (Hanford) drove in four runs and scored two as Trinity (Texas) steamrolled Texas-Tyler 14-2 to advance to Saturday’s NCAA Division III West Regional championship round in Spokane.

Trinity (38-7) will play Pacific Lutheran or Texas-Tyler for the title.

▪ Retiring eight of the first nine hitters he faced, Mason Hilty (Richland) became the first Dixie State pitcher in the school’s NCAA Division II era to reach 10 wins in a season, and the Trailblazers beat Cal State East Bay 6-4 in an NCAA West Regional elimination game in Riverside, Calif.

Hilty allowed six hits and four runs in seven innings for Dixie State (39-13), which will play another loser-out game against Cal Poly Pomona or Cal State Monterey Bay at 3 p.m. Saturday.

TENNIS

2A DISTRICT 5/6: Prosser’s Joslyn Felicijan claimed the girls singles district title and the No. 1 seed to state with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Teighan Moore of host Ephrata.

Othello’s Collin Freeman and Kyler Villarreal beat East Valley’s Jask Khinda and Aidan Fallstrom 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) to take the boys doubles championship.

Othello’s Diego Villarreal defeated Selah’s Tristan McDevitt 6-1, 6-0 in the boys singles consolation final, grabbing the No. 3 seed to state.

The Huskies’ girls doubles team of Kylee Hawley and Zoee Roylance rebounded from a loss in the championship match to take the No. 2 seed, beating Quincy’s Natalie Thomsen and Rachel Faw 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4).

The 2A state championships are next Friday and Saturday at Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle.

STANFIELD 14, NYSSA 0 (5): Dylan Grogan pitched a no-hitter, striking out 10 with no walks, and hit a two-run home run to lead the host Tigers (25-2) over the Bulldogs for the Eastern Oregon League district title.

Grogan has thrown three solo no-hitters and combined on a fourth.

CWAC DISTRICTS: Othello will head to state as the 2A District 5/6 champion after beating Ellensburg 10-8 on Thursday night at Carlon Park in Selah.

Othello’s Madison Martinez hit three home runs on the day and drove in eight RBIs. Niki Martinez also homered in each game and finished with five RBIs for the Huskies (20-2), who beat East Valley 11-1 earlier in the day to secure a berth in next week’s 2A state tournament at Carlon Park.
