Roundup: Chiawana downs Pasco in MCC baseball on Vargas’ walkoff HR

CHIAWANA 6, PASCO 5: Andrew Vargas homered on a 3-2 pitch to lead off the bottom of the seventh to carry the Riverhawks through to Saturday’s second round of district play.

Chiawana (10-10-1) advances to play Richland (12-9) at 10 a.m. Saturday in a loser-out game at Walla Walla’s Murr Field. The winner plays the host Blue Devils (14-7) at 1 p.m. for the district title.

The Riverhawks trailed 4-2 in the middle of the fourth before rallying and taking the lead in the fifth on Trent Simpkins’ grounder through the left side, scoring Vargas.

Pasco (2-19) pulled even in the sixth after Omar Avila led off with a single, moved up on a passed ball and scored on Keaton Stewart’s sac fly.

Brady Bush had three hits for Kamiakin (13-8), which plays Southridge (16-4) at 10 a.m. Saturday at Roy Johnson Field. The winner of that game advances to play Kennewick (18-2) for the district championship at 1 p.m.

Bradley Poletski led Hanford (5-15) at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

STANFIELD 14-14, NYSSA 1-0: The Tigers threw back-to-back no-hitters — their sixth and seventh of the season — in a sweep on the road.

Dylan Grogan went the distance in the opener, striking out 13 of the 21 batters he faced. It was the third no-hitter Grogan has been part of this season.

Brody Woods, Tony Flores and Ryan Bailey combined to complete the feat in the second game. Flores also drove in six runs on the day.

RICHLAND 8-10, KAMIAKIN 0-0: With their sweep of the Braves at Columbia Playfield, the Bombers (17-2-1 overall, 13-1 MCC) finished the regular season tied with Walla Walla for first place in the conference.

Richland and Wa-Hi will play a tiebreaker for the MCC’s No. 1 4A district seed Tuesday at Murr Sports Park. Kamiakin (8-12, 8-6) is the MCC’s top seed among 3A teams.

Brandi Andrews pitched all 12 innings on the day for the Bombers, allowing five hits, walking one and striking out 11.

Paige Liikala hit a three-run double during the Bombers’ seven-run fifth inning in Game 1. Kelsea Hinkley went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and three runs scored in the nightcap.

Wa-Hi’s Brandi Schoessler (11 strikeouts, one hit allowed in five innings) combined with Jax Conklin (two K’s) on a three-hitter in Game 1. Brittney Yocom had two of Southridge’s hits.

The Suns will host Kennewick at 5 p.m. Thursday in an MCC district loser-out game.

Hanford finished the season with the MCC’s No. 2 3A seed. Next Saturday at Columbia Playfield, Hanford will play the winner of Thursday’s Southridge-Kennewick game in the 3A district tournament.

Kennewick’s Shyann Pratt collected four hits.

CHIAWANA 15-21, PASCO 1-5: Annalisa McKinney pitched a four-hitter in Game 1, striking out three, and had two hits in the nightcap as the Riverhawks (11-9, 8-6) completed the regular season with a sweep of the host Bulldogs (2-17, 0-14).

Pasco had 10 hits in Game 2, but the Bulldogs committed 15 errors in the doubleheader.

“We had great hits,” Pasco coach JaiLynn Stoker said. “Our errors killed us.”

Chiawana will host Pasco at 5 p.m. Thursday in an MCC 4A district loser-out game.

ROYAL 17-6, RIVER VIEW 5-10: Kylie Sakota drove in five runs on the day as the host Panthers secured the No. 2 seed in the SCAC East.

“She was hitting the ball hard, and even the ones she got out on, she was hitting screamers,” River View coach Andy Clayton said. “It was awesome.”

The Panthers (7-3 SCAC East) had to win one game to get the No. 2 seed. They did it in the nightcap, taking the lead for good with a four-run sixth inning.

Danika Whitsett pitched all six innings for Tri-Cities Prep, allowing four hits, walking two and striking out seven.

Liberty Christian’s Katie Steele went 5-for-5 with four RBIs in the nightcap to salvage the nonleague split. There were 38 hits between the teams in Game 2.

WALLA WALLA 12, CBC 4: The host Warriors got the big hits, including home runs from Anna Williams, Jacie McDaniels and Erin Ware for a big win in the first game of their NWAC East doubleheader.

The second game results were not updated by deadline Friday.

McDaniels doubled in a run and Ware slugged a two-run homer as Walla Walla scored four runs in the first. Williams cracked a three-run blast to power a five-run frame in the third.
