Mid-Columbia roundup: Fast start key for Richland in softball win
The Richland softball team scored all of its runs in the first inning and held on to defeat Chiawana 7-4 in Wednesday’s Mid-Columbia Conference game at Columbia Playfield.
Miranda Camacho went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Richland (12-2-1, 8-1 MCC), which moved back into a tie for first place in the conference with Walla Walla. Brandi Andrews struck out nine and walked two in her complete-game win.
All of Richland’s runs were charged to Maile Bishop, who pitched two-thirds of an inning. Fellow freshman Annalisa McKinney entered and held the Bombers scoreless the rest of the way.
McKinney also homered for the Riverhawks (9-6, 6-3), while Julia Cantu was 3-for-4 with a double.

OTHELLO 12-14, WAPATO 0-0: Madison Martinez pitched a perfect game with 13 strikeouts, and Niki Martinez followed with a one-hitter, also striking out 13, as the Huskies swept Tuesday’s CWAC road twinbill.
Othello (12-2, 11-1) is tied for first place in the CWAC with Selah.

▪ Linfield sophomore outfielder Melanie Oord (Kamiakin) was named to the all-Northwest Conference first team for softball.
Oord, who helped the Wildcats win the NWC tournament title last weekend, started 41 of 42 games this year for Linfield (29-13). She leads the team with a .456 (62-for-136) batting average, 15 doubles and 46 RBIs.
Oord’s older brother Drew made the all-NWC baseball second team earlier this week.
George Fox senior catcher Courtney Howard (Hermiston) was chosen as honorable mention for the second consecutive year.
Tennis
Kamiakin’s Kara Newcomb rallied in the third set to beat Grace Hamaker-Teals and lead the Braves to a 4-3 victory over Southridge in Mid-Columbia Conference tennis action Wednesday.
Newcomb won the first set 6-4 in the No. 1 singles match, while Hamaker-Teals won the second 6-4.
Hamaker-Teals had a 5-2 lead in the third set before Newcomb fought her way back to tie the set at 6.
In the tiebreaker, Hamaker-Teals had a commanding 6-2 lead, but Newcomb again rallied, winning 10-8.
“It was a remarkable comeback,” Kamiakin coach Sarah Miller said. “It was the deciding match, and it helped keep us undefeated.”
The win puts Kamiakin at 5-0 in the MCC with two matches to play.

Golf
The Tri-Cities Prep girls finished second and the boys third in Wednesday’s action at Walla Walla’s Wine Valley Golf Club.
Walla Walla’s Brooke Cramer was the girls medalist at 89, two strokes ahead of Pomeroy’s Deana Caruso and 11 in front of third-place Rachel Armijo of Tri-Cities Prep.
On the boys side, Scott Kimble of DeSales was second at 75, four strokes behind Colfax’s Chance Weitze. Tri-Cities Prep’s Hogan Jones was fourth (80).
