Mid-Columbia: Chiawana hands Pasco first soccer loss of year

The Chiawana High School boys soccer team gave the Pasco Bulldogs their first loss of the season and ended their 26-game conference winning streak Saturday night.

Shambel West’s overtime goal lifted the host Riverhawks to a 3-2 win over their crosstown rivals.

“I’m proud of the kids; we had to come back from being down twice,” Chiawana coach Rich Zoller said. “They showed a lot of character persevering in a tough situation, especially after Thursday night when we didn’t play so well.”

Chiawana, which improved to 8-3 overall and 8-2 in the MCC with the win over Pasco (11-1, 9-1), got a big boost from the return of Jose Rodriguez, who missed four games. He scored both of Chiawana’s goals in regulation.

David Uribe and Jesus Meraz-Rodriguez each had a goal for Pasco.

“I’m proud of the focus it took — it’s hard to win 26 straight games,” Bulldogs coach Matt Potter said. “I’m proud of what they’ve done the last three years.”
