Mid-Columbia roundup for April 15: Chiawana, Kamiakin split in softball
The Kamiakin Braves and Chiawana Riverhawks gave softball fans a show Friday in Pasco.
Chiawana rallied for a 14-10 win in Game 1 of their Mid-Columbia Conference doubleheader, but Kamiakin salvaged a split in the nightcap with a 14-8 victory.
Chiawana (7-5, 4-2) is third in the MCC behind fellow Class 4A teams Walla Walla and Richland, who are 6-0 in conference play. Kamiakin (2-9, 2-4) is tied with Kennewick for the No. 2 spot among the MCC 3A teams, behind Southridge.
In Game 1, Chiawana trailed 6-0 before scoring three runs in the bottom of the third inning. After Kamiakin put up two runs in the fourth, Chiawana came back in the bottom half and pushed seven across the plate for a 10-8 lead it wouldn’t relinquish.
“Their pitcher took a line drive off a leg, and they had to take her out (in the third inning),” Chiawana coach Paul Antonovich said. “They threw two other girls after her, and we hit them pretty well.”
Kamiakin opened the nightcap with four runs in the first and led 7-0 after the top of the third. Chiawana chipped away at its deficit before the Braves all but shut the door with a six-run sixth to make it 14-3.
“The girl who started the first game (Kamiakin’s Andria Skeels), she came back and threw that game,” Antonovich said. “She did a pretty good job.”
Skeels and Kenzie Lowry each went 3-for-5 in Game 2 for Kamiakin.
Chiawana’s Haley Cartagena was 3-for-4 in Game 1, and Anisa Garcia had three hits in the nightcap.
