Roundup: Southridge, Kennewick, Richland baseball sweep MCC openers

Bryce Grigg drove in five runs and Chad Crider three to spearhead a bounty of offense for Southridge in a 17-7 win over visiting Chiawana on Friday in the second game of the Mid-Columbia Conference twinbill.

Bradley Morgan threw five innings of no-hit ball for the Suns in the the opener, a 10-0 win in the MCC debut for both squads. Morgan struck out six.

Jashaun Simon was 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs for Southridge in the first game.

Anthony Vega and Brayden Childs each had two hits for Chiawana in the second game.

KENNEWICK 5-8, WALLA WALLA 2-2: Gerald Hein and Matt Driver delivered a pair of strong starts for the Lions, who broke out the bats in the second gmae of their MCC doubleheader at Roy Johnson Field.

Garrett Dixon went 3-for-4 with a double and a triple, and TJ Rey drove in a pair of runs as Kennewick banged out 15 hits in the nightcap.

Anders Davidson was 4-for-6 on the day for Walla Walla with a homer in the second game.

RICHLAND 13-3, PASCO 0-0: Hunter French and Cameron Jenkins turned in a pair of top-notch starts for the Bombers, who broke out the big bats in the opener of the MCC doubleheader.

Casey Perryman and Griffey March each had doubled and had four hits in the opener, with March adding a triple and three RBIs to his total.

Jenkins struck out 11 in six innings in the second game. Pasco counterpart Dominic Monville was solid over seven innings, striking out two and letting his defense do the work.

EASTMONT 6-3, SUNNYSIDE 0-2: The Grizzlies came up short in a Big Nine pitchers duel in the second game.

PROSSER 19-9, GRANDVIEW 9-7: Ariah Yager went 4-for-5 with a double and three RBIs to lead the Mustangs in the opener of a CWAC sweep.

ZILLAH 11-12, RIVER VIEW 0-2: Dreyden Devers had a pair of hits and Jared Brown a double in the second game for the Panthers in the nonleague losses.

STANFIELD 6-10, UMATILLA 2-0: Tony Flores and Ryan Bailey combined on a one-hitter in the opener, and Dylan Grogan repeated the feat by himself with 15 strikeouts to his credit in the second game.

Damien Curiel doubled and drove in three runs in the second game, and Adrian Renner had five hits on the day.

Softball

CBC 7-5, BMCC 1-0: Sarah Gilliam (Southridge) threw five shutout innings in Game 2, helping the Hawks secure an NWAC East sweep of the Timberwolves in Pasco.

Kayla Andrews (Richland) earned a complete-game win in the opener, striking out 11 and giving up four hits, and closed out the second game.

Andrews also went 5-for-7 on the afternoon with five RBIs for the Hawks (16-6 overall, 8-2 NWAC East), who pulled into a tie for second place in the region with North Idaho. The Hawks will host first-place Walla Walla today.

WALLA WALLA 10-23, KENNEWICK 0-1: The Blue Devils hammered out 34 hits on the day while Walla Walla’s pitchers allowed one hit in each game of their MCC sweep of the Lions.

Brandi Schoessler started Game 1 and struck out six in four innings before giving way to Jax Conklin for the final frame. Kamryn Coleman pitched four innings in the second game, striking out five, before Conklin closed it out.

Faith Hoe drove in five runs on the day for the undefeated Blue Devils. Every Walla Walla batter in Game 2 had at least one hit.

CHIAWANA 3-5, SOUTHRIDGE 2-6: Sam Cissney doubled in a run and scored on Morgan Hirai’s single as the Riverhawks rallied in their final at-bat to win the opener of the MCC doubleheader.

The Suns returned the favor in the second game, scoring six runs over the final two innings after being no-hit through five by Chiawana pitcher Maile Bishiop.

Southridge scored four runs in the seventh, with Brittney Yocom tying the game with a double and Bailey Monteith following with a two-run single.

The Suns were outhit by the Riverhawks 12-3 in the game.

KAMIAKIN 9-1, HANFORD 1-10: The two teams swapped mirrored blowouts, starting with Kamiakin’s Andria Skeels throwing seven innings of tow-hit ball and striking out eight and also going 3-for-4 at the plate in the opener of the MCC doubleheader. It was the Braves’ first win of the season.

In the second game, Hanford’s Mya Moore threw seven innings of three-hit ball with no earned runs and eighth strikeouts. She also went 2-for-4 with a double.

RICHLAND 21-8, PASCO 0-0: Brandi Andrews pitched a no-hitter, homered twice and drove in five runs in Game 1, and gave up three hits and struck out 11 in the second game to lead the Bombers to an MCC sweep of the visiting Bulldogs.

Paige Liikala and Natalie Giroux each drove in three runs in the opener, and Liikala also homered in the second game. Stephanie Merwin hit three doubles and a triple on the day.

Golf

JOE LENBERG CLASSIC: Richland’s Evan Hattori tied for fifth overall with an even-par 72, and three more Bombers finished in the top 12 for a team victory at Apple Tree Golf Course in Yakima.

Rhett Levin finished eighth at 75, followed by Nick Yamauchi (10th, 77) and Carl Underwood (12th, 78). Richland finished 10 strokes ahead of second-place West Valley.

Walla Walla’s Parker Dressler also shot 72 to place fifth, leading the Blue Devils to third in the team race at 313. Alex Johnson shot 78 to tie for 12th.

Kamiakin was fourth beind the 10th-place finish of McGuire Hanson with a 77.
