Mid-Columbia roundup for March 31: Hanford girls track wins again

It has been a week to remember for the Hanford girls track and field team.

Five days after knocking off the four-time defending Class 3A state champion Kamiakin Braves at the Ram Relays in Yakima, the Falcons beat Richland for the first time in program history.

Host Hanford defeated Richland 92-58 and also picked up a 107-43 win over Chiawana on Thursday.

Hanford’s Lele Williams won the 200 meters and 300 hurdles, while Hailey Cleavenger took the 1,600 and 3,200. Hanford won all three relays.

Devyn Dittmer (100) and McCall Redden (triple jump) were winners for Richland, while Katie Thien (400), Elisa Guzman (discus) and Demiah Martinez (javelin) led Chiawana.

On the boys side, Hanford beat Richland 81-64 and rolled past Chiawana 101-44. The Richland boys and girls defeated the Riverhawks.

Hanford’s Porter McMichael won the boys 800 by more than six seconds. He was first in the 1,600 with a time of 4 minutes, 27.93 seconds, beating Richland freshman Riley Moore by almost 2 seconds.

Joseph Gauthier was first in the 100 and 200 for the Falcons, and he ran on the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.

Richland won all field events except the long jump (Chiawana’s Dominic Lee). Chiawana’s Roman Ruiz swept the hurdles.

KENNEWICK AT PASCO: The Lions boys and girls defeated the Bulldogs at Edgar Brown Stadium.

Kennewick’s Johan Correa won the boys 800 and 1,600, and ran on the first-place 4x400 relay team as the Lions prevailed 85-60.

On the girls side, Darby Havrelock won the 400 for the Lions and led off for the winning 4x400 relay team as Kennewick beat Pasco 73.5-69.5.

Pasco’s Kaleb Ash and Angela Cardon swept the 100 and 200. Ash won the boys long jump and was on the first-place 4x100 relay team. Cardon was a winner in the girls long and triple jumps.

Softball

CHIAWANA 14, EISENHOWER 4 (5): The Riverhawks rallied from a 4-3 deficit in a big way, scoring 11 runs in the top of the fifth inning to secure the nonleague win over the Cadets.

Sam Cissne drove in three runs for Chiawana, while MoniQue Maldonado, Annalisa McKinney and Alexa Beutler each knocked in two.

Golf

JOE LENBERG CLASSIC: Kamiakin’s Alexa Clark edged Pasco’s Jalayne Martinez in a playoff to take top honors at Apple Tree Golf Course in Yakima.

Both girls shot a 1-under-par 71 through regulation.

Southridge’s Therese Warner tied for third with a 77, leading the Suns to the team title by 22 strokes over the Braves. Teammates Samantha Hui (seventh at 83) and Amanda Brunson (eighth, 84) also finished in the top 10. The team’s fourth and final scorer, Meredith Hibbard, finished 11th with an 86.

Brianna Esvelt shot an 85 to place 10th and bolster the Braves. Walla Walla’s Allison Wanichek tied Brunson for eighth at 84.
