Richland swimmer Westendorf earns two top-8 finishes at 4A state meet
Cole Westendorf led Richland to eighth place in the Class 4A boys state swimming and diving championships Saturday night at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
The Bombers ended with 128 points. Newport of Bellevue won its third consecutive team title with 234.
Westendorf took fourth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4 minute, 46.22 seconds, and he was eighth in the 100 backstroke (55.24).
Jeff Kern finished seventh in the 500 free (4:50.40), dropping almost two seconds from his time in preliminaries. Conor McShane was seventh in the 100 breaststroke (59.48).
The Bombers’ 200 medley relay — Westendorf, McShane, Charles Fillebrown and Scott Francis — finished third with a time of 1:39.44. The 400 free relay — Francis, Fillebrown, Kern and Westendorf — placed eighth (3:18.30).
In “B” finals, for those who finished ninth through 16th in prelims, Addison Pollick was 10th overall in the 500 free and 15th in the 100 back. Kern took 15th in the 200 free, and Fillebrown 16th in the 100 butterfly. The Bombers were 11th in the 200 free relay.
Walla Walla’s Chris Yaw closed out his high school swim career with a 10th-place finish in the 200 free.
In the 3A meet, Hanford was 10th.
Led by freshman Skyler Younkin’s seventh-place finish in the 100 fly, the Falcons earned 75.5 points. Bellevue was disqualified in the 400 freestyle relay “A” final, but the Wolverines piled up 349.5 points to win the team title. Bainbridge was second with 288.
Younkin, who attends Tri-Cities Prep, completed the fly in 52.12, while Hanford junior Brady Myers was 10th (52.98).
Myers placed 12th in the 50 free. Younkin took 13th in the 200 free, a spot ahead of freshman teammate John Markillie, who tied with Mercer Island’s Killian Riley in 1:48.17.
Markillie was 11th in the 500 free.
The Falcons were 10th in the 200 free relay and 11th in the 200 medley and 400 free relays. Sophomore diver Remi Marvel was 16th.
In the 2A competition, Sunnyside Christian freshman Parker Van de Graaf finished sixth with a score of 282.05. Othello sophomore Hunter Sparks was 11th in the 100 fly (57.30), and Grandview senior Micah Binfet placed 12th in the 100 breast (1:05.67).

OREGON 5A STATE: Hermiston senior Jacob Snell was 12th in the boys 100 fly prelims Friday in Gresham. Snell finished in 1:02.68, improving on his district-winning time of 1:03.00, but the top six advanced to Saturday’s final.
