Richland’s 500 free swimmers lead way at state
The Richland boys swim team has a trio built for distance.
Cole Westendorf is sitting in second, Jeff Kern in sixth and Addison Pollick in 10th going into Saturday’s Class 4A 500-yard state freestyle finals at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
Westendorf finished the preliminaries with a time of 4 minutes, 44.41 seconds, trailing only Camas’ Mark Kim (4:40.19). Kern was timed in 4:52.25 and Pollick in 4:57.51. The top eight swimmers in prelims advance to Saturday’s “A” final, while Nos. 9-16 move on to the “B” final.

Teammate Conor McShane nudged into the “A” final of the 100 breaststroke with his eighth-place time of 59.81.
Richland got its third-place 200 medley and seventh-place 400 free relays into “A” finals, while the Bombers were 13th in the 200 free relay.
Kern was 11th in the 200 free and will join 10th-place Chris Yaw of Walla Walla in the “B” final. Richland’s Charles Fillebrown was 15th in the 100 butterfly.
In the 3A meet, Skyler Younkin led Hanford with his fourth-place finish in the 100 fly.

Younkin, who attends Tri-Cities Prep, secured a “B” final berth in the 200 free by placing 14th, two spots ahead of fellow Hanford freshman swimmer John Markillie.
Markillie was 11th in the 500 free. Junior teammate Brady Myers was 10th in the 100 fly and 15th in the 50 free.
The Falcons also got all three of their relays into “B” finals, while diver Remi Marvel (12th) will compete on the second day.
