Mid-Columbia roundup for Feb. 12: Richland girls oust Walla Walla
Illness hit the Richland girls basketball team ahead of Friday night’s Mid-Columbia Conference Class 4A district tournament game against Walla Walla, but the Bombers toughed out a 57-45 win.
Richland (17-4) will go to top-seeded Chiawana for the district title game at 5 p.m. Saturday. Both teams will move on to the MCC/Greater Spokane League subregional tournament next week.
Bombers coach Cindy McCoy, who also got hit with the nasty bug, was relieved to leave Art Dawald Gym with the victory.
“Walla Walla is a very dangerous team,” she said of the Blue Devils, who split the regular-season series with the Bombers. “With my kids not having been feeling well, I was really happy to come out of there with the win. I thought we took better care of the ball, and the kids really stepped up.”
Kamri von Oelhoffen led Richland with 19 points, and Mickala Trappett scored 13. Von Oelhoffen and Maysun Wellsandt had nine rebounds apiece.
The Bombers jumped on the Blue Devils early, running out to a 21-6 first-quarter lead. Walla Walla cut into Richland’s lead, outscoring the Bombers 27-18 over the second and third quarters.
Walla Walla got 18 points from Faith Hoe and 10 from Olivia Doepker, but the Blue Devils couldn’t make it two wins in a row in the district tournament. They finished the season with a 12-10 record.

SOUTHRIDGE 37, KENNEWICK 31: Shyler Sullivan had 14 points to lead the host Suns to a district tournament win that eliminated the Lions.
Southridge (11-10) will play for the Class 3A title at 5 p.m. Saturday at Kamiakin (11-10), which beat the Suns in a 1-2 district seeding game Monday night. Both teams advance to next week’s MCC/GSL subregionals.
Ellie Smith finished with 12 rebounds and six blocks for Southridge.
Bianca Chavez led Kennewick (7-14) with 11 points.

WENATCHEE 71, SUNNYSIDE 63: Emilee Maldonado had a season-high 31 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Grizzlies lost on the road to the Panthers in their final CBBN regular-season game.
Sunnyside (14-6, 7-5 CBBN) will host Eastmont on Tuesday in the first round of the CBBN district tournament.
Maddi Hallberg led Wenatchee with 24 points.

ZILLAH 57, CONNELL 54 (OT): Heather Hawkins had 12 points and 14 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as the Eagles fell in overtime to the host Leopards in the first round of the SCAC district tournament Thursday.
Tied at 46 after regulation, Zillah went on an 11-8 run in overtime for the win.
Kendra Wallin had 15 points for Connell, which will play River View at 2 p.m. Saturday in a loser-out game in Wapato.

BOYS BASKETBALL
WALLA WALLA 54, CHIAWANA 53: Andrew Harvey hit a 3-pointer with 3 seconds remaining to send the host Blue Devils (14-7) into the 4A district title game.
Harvey finished with a game-high 23 points for Walla Walla, which will visit Richland (17-3) at 7 p.m. Saturday to decide the 4A district champion and 1-2 seeding for next week’s MCC/GSL subregionals.
Tre Joseph had 19 points in the season-ending loss for Chiawana (12-10), while Andrey Voloshin scored 15.
The Riverhawks, who shot 54 percent (20-for-37) from the field, twice rallied from double-digit deficits.
“Our kids just fought their hearts out, and they fought hard enough to win,” Chiawana coach Chad Herron said. “It just wasn’t meant to be.”

Gabe Vorheis finished with 19 points for Southridge (10-11), which trailed by three at halftime before being outscored 22-8 in the third quarter.

REGIONAL WRESTLING
The Kamiakin Braves moved seven into Saturday’s 3A semifinal round at Hanford High School.
Austin Almaguer (106 pounds) led the Kamiakin parade to the semifinals, followed by Riley Gurr (113), Sione Halo (145), Jacob Lawson (160), Zach Borisch (170), Hayden Larson (220) and Nick Little (285).
Southridge has Marco Mendoza (106), Xavier Velasco (120), Cesar Flores (126), Zayid Al-Ghani (170), Taylor Ambrose (195) and Riley Lopez (220) in the semifinals.
Kennewick advanced Emilio Ramos at 138 and Alex Ramos at 145.
Austin Dreyer (195) reached the semifinals for Hanford, as did Jonathan Burt (220).
Saturday’s action starts at 10 a.m. The top four in each weight class will advance to Mat Classic in Tacoma.
BOYS SWIMMING
Hanford swimmers took the top spots in the 200-yard medley relay, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 100 free, 500 free, 100 backstroke and 400 free relay in the district preliminaries in Kelso.
Skyler Younkin swam a Class 3A state-qualifying time of 52.63 seconds in the 100 fly.
The finals are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday.
