Columbia-Burbank girls win SCAC district basketball opener

The host Columbia-Burbank girls basketball team took care of business — and the ball — in Thursday night’s SCAC district tournament opener against Naches Valley.

The Coyotes, who had 25 turnovers in the first half of an overtime win against the Rangers earlier in the season, gave up the ball far less in a 60-45 victory that sent them into Saturday’s district semifinals.

Columbia-Burbank will face Granger at 8 p.m. Saturday at Toppenish High School. Zillah will play La Salle in the other semifinal at 6 p.m. Saturday at Wapato High School.

“We kind of knew what we were up against, but we did a much better job of taking care of the basketball,” Columbia-Burbank coach Jay Aune said. “It was probably one of the better games we played in a while. Naches Valley is very athletic.”

Ali Martineau, Caitlyn Aune and Jamie Ellis each scored 13 points for the Coyotes, who shot 50 percent (20-for-40) from the field.
