Mid-Columbia roundup for Feb. 4: Richland swimmers kick off districts

Richland was first in all three relays and had two top individual times in the preliminaries of the Class 4A boys district swimming and diving championships Thursday in Moses Lake.

The Bombers were in the top three in 10 of 11 events.

Jeff Kern swam a state-qualifying time of 4 minutes, 57.49 seconds to lead in the 500-yard freestyle. Walla Walla’s Chris Yaw got his state cut, finishing second in 4:58.87, while Richland’s Addison Pollick (5:00.28) was third.

Richland’s Cole Westendorf, the top seed entering prelims, was fifth (5:01.99). But he had the top time in the 100 backstroke (57.02).

In the 1A/2A meet, Grandview’s Tavian Valenzuela (50 free, 100 breaststroke) and Micah Binfet (100 breast, 100 butterfly) each made two Saturday “A” finals along with Prosser’s Levi Russell (50 free, 100 back). Grandview’s also in position to advance to state in the 200 medley and 200 free relays.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

EPHRATA 62, OTHELLO 46: Hadassi Valdez hit four 3-pointers and finished with 18 points, but the Huskies lost to the host Tigers in CWAC action.

Othello (3-16, 2-15 CWAC) closes the season tonight in Prosser.

SUNNYSIDE CHRISTIAN 66, COLUMBIA-BURBANK 51: The Knights, the No. 2-ranked Class 1B team in the state, prevailed at home Tuesday in a nonleague contest against the Coyotes.

Katelyn Banks had 27 points for Sunnyside Christian, which led 31-15 at halftime.

Taylor Turner finished with 14 points to lead Columbia-Burbank.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

EASTERN WASHINGTON 72, NORTHERN ARIZONA 65: Delaney Hodgins (Chiawana High School) and Tisha Phillips each had a team-high 15 points to lead the Eagles (15-7, 9-1 Big Sky) to a road win over the Lumberjacks.

Hayley Hodgins scored

12 points for the Eagles. She’s 77 behind Brenda Souther for the EWU career scoring record.

Trailing 68-58 with 2:37 to play, NAU roared back and pulled to within three with 58 seconds remaining. But Phillips hit a clutch 3-pointer with 20 seconds to go and put the game out of reach.

IDAHO 93, SOUTHERN UTAH 48: Mikayla Ferenz (Walla Walla) scored 14 points and was one of three Vandals in double figures as Idaho (16-6, 8-2 Big Sky) romped at home.

This is the first season in which the Vandals have reached 90 points in three consecutive games.

GOLF

The Idaho women’s team, which includes Kristin Strankman of Richland, was selected as the preseason Big Sky favorite in a poll of the conference’s coaches.
