Chiawana won the first round of Friday night’s high school girls basketball/wrestling/boys hoops tripleheader at Pasco.

Braydey Hodgins led the way with 26 points in the Riverhawks’ 69-47 victory.

Elisa Guzman had 13 points, and Clare Eubanks finished with 11 to help Chiawana improve to 15-2 overall and 10-0 in the Mid-Columbia Conference.

But Pasco hung tough in the crosstown rivalry game.

Jalayne Martinez had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs (3-14, 2-9), who trailed 15-11 in the first quarter before Chiawana zoomed to a 41-16 halftime lead.

Bella Gutierrez, who played 22 minutes because of foul trouble, finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

After Bulldogs point guard Lexi Montelongo hurt her ankle in the second quarter, the Riverhawks switched up their defense in response.

“We had 11 turnovers in that quarter trying to figure out the pressure,” Pasco coach Aaron Barcot said.

Alicia Lopez stepped in to run the point, and her presence helped the Bulldogs outscore the Riverhawks 31-28 in the second half.

“You could tell she’s had four years of varsity experience and settled us down and got us going,” Barcot said.
