Mid-Columbia roundup for Jan. 28: Hanford, Wa-Hi bowlers take districts
While the Hanford bowling team and Falcons sophomore Sara Harris repeated as Class 3A/2A/1A district champions Thursday at Atomic Bowl in Richland, a change was afoot in the 4A tournament.
Second-year program Walla Walla, which finished last in 2015, edged Richland by four pins for the district title. The Blue Devils will compete at next weekend’s state championships in University Place.
Walla Walla sophomore Kayla Davis won her first 4A individual crown with a 553 total over three scratch games. She sealed it by rolling the day’s high game of 235.
Maya Fogg (377), Allyson Heimbigner (450), Cecilia Chantel (400) and Kailee Hudson (364) also factored into Wa-Hi’s winning score.
The Blue Devils trailed the Bombers by 22 pins entering the seventh and final baker game. Wa-Hi completed the tournament with a 159 game, while Richland bowled a 133.
The two individual state spots went to runner-up Shyanne Thorne of Richland (500) and third-place Josie Derrick of Pasco (498).
Hanford dominated in the 3A/2A/1A standings, beating Selah by 595 pins to secure the lone team berth to state.
Harris, the Mid-Columbia Conference bowler of the year, finished with a 551 in the scratch games. Teammate Danyelle Moore was second with 511. Emily Goodnight (fourth, 502), Megan Bean (fifth, 495) and Bryanna Decker (seventh, 477) also contributed to the Falcons’ large cushion.
Third-place finisher Marivel Macias of Kennewick (503) and sixth-place Maggie Cox of Selah (481) claimed the two 3A/2A/1A individual state berths.

Boys swimming
Grandview’s Tavian Valenzuela and Micah Binfet, and Prosser’s Levi Russell had runner-up finishes in their teams’ losses to Selah.
Valenzuela was second in the 100-yard backstroke (1 minute, 11.76 seconds) and in the 50 freestyle (24.43). Binfet was No. 2 in the 100 butterfly (1:07.39).
Russell took second in the 50 free (25.74) and 100 free (58.26).
Selah beat Grandview 128-25 and Prosser 130-11.
