Mid-Columbia roundup for Jan. 27: Kamiakin gymnasts defeat Southridge to close regular season
The Kamiakin gymnastics team closed out the regular season Wednesday night at home with its fifth consecutive Tri-City meet win over Southridge.
The Braves finished with a total of 163.800, while Southridge ended the night with 134.325.
Kamiakin senior Saige Polanik topped the all-around standings with a score of 34.675, edging freshman teammate Abby Winstead (34.150). Southridge freshman Makayla Hui was third with 31.900.
Winstead won on vault and beam, but Polanik outscored Winstead on the floor, 9.025-7.25.
Kamiakin’s Sophia Mancinelli won on bars.
The Braves, winners of the past two Class 1A/2A/3A state team titles, will face the Suns at the district meet Feb. 5 at Garland’s Gym in Kennewick.
Both teams will advance to regionals Feb. 13 in Spokane.

Prep basketball
The Chiawana girls, who are 9-0 in Mid-Columbia Conference play, moved up two spots to No. 8 in The Associated Press Class 4A weekly state poll.
With last week’s loss to Sunnyside Christian, the Mabton girls slid from second to fifth in the 2B rankings.
Undefeated Sunnyside Christian remained at No. 2 in the 1B poll, while Touchet stayed at No. 7.
On the boys side, Liberty Christian rose from 10th to seventh, and Sunnyside Christian became the new No. 10 team in the 1B rankings.
TRI-CITIES PREP 61, PRESCOTT 55: Stefan Geist had 17 points to lead three Tri-Cities Prep players in double figures, and the Jaguars pulled away from the host Tigers in overtime to win Tuesday night’s Southeast 2B contest.
Prescott was led by Travis Crockett (26 points) and Jose Gonzalez (21).

WIAA athletes of the week
Wrestlers Riley Gurr of Kamiakin and Viannei Perez of Grandview were among 10 athletes recognized by the WIAA for their performances in Week 20.
Wrestling at 113 and 120 pounds, Gurr, a sophomore, went 4-0 during last weekend’s Dream Duals in Spokane.
Perez, a senior, also remained undefeated on the season, winning the lightweight outstanding wrestler award at the Grandview Invite on Saturday.
Boys swimming
The Walla Walla boys beat Eisenhower (119-52) and Davis (113-58) on Tuesday in Yakima.
Wa-Hi’s Chris Yaw won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 14.93 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 52.58.
Teammate Will Lash was first in the 100 backstroke (1:09.25).
The Blue Devils also were victorious against both schools in the 200 free (1:37.43) and 400 free relays (3:41.38).
