Mid-Columbia roundup for Jan. 20: Chiawana girls basketball team state-ranked
The Chiawana girls basketball team, which remains undefeated in Mid-Columbia Conference play, broke into The Associated Press Class 4A state poll this week at No. 10.
The Riverhawks (12-2 overall) received 15 points in the poll of state sports writers.
Mabton is knocking on first-place Okanogan’s door in the 2B rankings. The Vikings (13-1) moved up a spot to No. 2, 16 points behind Okanogan (12-0).
Sunnyside Christian (10-0) also inched up a spot to No. 2 in the 1B poll, while Touchet (10-3) rose two places to No. 7.
On the boys side, Kamiakin (11-3) dropped out of the Class 3A top 10 but still got five points. Liberty Christian (10-3) remained at No. 10 in the 1B rankings.
WIAA ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Pasco senior wrestler Victor Ramirez and Kennewick junior basketball player Saul Nieves were honored by the WIAA for their Week 19 performances.
Ramirez went 4-0 to win the 113-pound title at the Matman Classic in Silverdale, leading the Bulldogs to a fourth-place team finish.
Nieves averaged 17.2 points in games against Chiawana, Richland and Walla Walla. He made 15 3-pointers in those games.
BOYS BASKETBALL
WALLA WALLA VALLEY ACADEMY 47, TC PREP 46: Zayne Browning and Austin Jennings combined for 32 points, and WWVA survived a buzzer-beating 3-point miss by Isaiah Perez to earn the Southeast 2B road win.
Stefan Geist scored 12 points to lead Prep, which hit 4 of 9 free throws.

BOYS SWIMMING
Grandview got wins from 50-yard freestyler Micah Binfet (26.05 seconds) and its 200 free relay team (1:52.46) in a 116-42 loss to Cheney on Tuesday in Yakima.
The Greyhounds lost to Selah 123-30, with Grandview’s Tavian Valenzuela getting a first-place time of 56.32 in the 100 free.
Levi Russell was Prosser’s lone winner against Cheney, swimming a 25.24 in the 50 free as the Mustangs fell 132-20.
Russell’s 100 free time of 56.98 was a winner against Selah, but the Mustangs lost to the Vikings 127-20.

OTHELLO 51, GRANDVIEW 22: The Huskies had six pins and two forfeits en route to a CWAC road victory over the Greyhounds on Tuesday night.
Othello got a big win from Collin Freeman at 152 pounds, where he earned a 15-11 victory over JoJo Cisneros-Valdez.
