Mid-Columbia roundup for Jan. 13: Sunnyside girls fall out of AP basketball rankings
It was a tough week for the Sunnyside girls in the Associated Press Class 4A state basketball rankings.
The Grizzlies started the season 9-0 and were ranked fifth in the first 4A poll of the season, but they fell out of the top 10 this week after losing three in a row.
Chiawana (10-2 overall, 5-0 Mid-Columbia Conference) also was outside the top 10.
Mabton moved up a spot to No. 3 in the 2B rankings.
Sunnyside Christian remained third in the 1B poll, and Touchet went down a spot to No. 9.
On the boys side, Kamiakin hung on to No. 10 in the 3A rankings. Liberty Christian broke in at No. 10 in the 1B poll.
Richland and Chiawana (4A), and Sunnyside Christian (1B) received votes in their respective polls but did not crack the top 10.

Abby Winstead won the beam, floor and all-around to lead Kamiakin over host Southridge in a Mid-Columbia Conference meet.
The Braves beat Southridge by 15.1 points, their smallest margin of victory over the Suns in four meets this season.
Kamiakin’s Piper Polanik was first on vault, while Southridge’s Makayla Hui won on bars.

WIAA athletes of the week
Wrestlers Kurt Blackman of Walla Walla and David Just of Waitsburg, Chiawana junior bowler Najeli Ruiz and Liberty Christian senior basketball player Chris Kelly were among the WIAA’s Athletes of the Week for Week 18.
Blackman, a senior heavyweight, clinched Wa-Hi’s 33-32 win over Southridge with his second-round pin of Tamerlan Pliev.
Just, a junior competing at 138 pounds, defeated two Reardan wrestlers with a pin and a 17-11 decision.
Ruiz rolled a 146 and 198 in Chiawana’s 4-0 victory over Richland.
Kelly averaged 26.3 points and 13 rebounds in last week’s wins over Weston-McEwen, Garfield-Palouse and Oakesdale.
