The Kennewick boys basketball team needed every bit of an early lead to hold off Chiawana 77-68 in Mid-Columbia Conference play Tuesday at the Lions Den.

“We shot the ball well tonight,” said Lions coach Bradyn Leyde, whose team led 24-15 in the first quarter. “It was a close game. They shot the ball well in the second half, but we were able to hold them off with a couple of perimeter shots and making our free throws.”

Saul Nieves led four Kennewick players in double figures with 20 points. Simplicio Hernandez added 18 points, Dillon Plew 16 and Nico Benavidez 10.

“We are happy with our balanced scoring,” said Leyde, whose team improved to 4-2 in MCC play. “Our guys are playing unselfish.”
