Tuesday night prep roundup: Richland boys beat Chiawana

The Richland basketball team just returned from last weekend’s Tacoma Winter Classic, where the Bombers played the championship game in front of about 20 fans.

So even though they were on the road, they were extra thankful — not to mention extra good — during their 93-83 Mid-Columbia Conference victory over Chiawana in front of a packed-to-the-rafters crowd that got their money’s worth.

Cayden Cazier scored 26 points for the Riverhawks in a heroic effort. The senior guard, returning from two-years worth of frustrating injuries, kept Chiawana in the game when it looked like Richland was pulling away.

“Cayden is all heart. I’ve never questioned his toughness,” Riverhawks coach Chad Herron said. “He doesn’t know any other way to do it.”

In the end, the Bombers won by doing what they do best — using a disciplined approach to create shots (and hitting them) and playing strong defense.

Landon Radliff led Richland with 34 points, while Steven Beo and Tyler Kurtz combined for 48 more.

Chiawana took a 4-0 lead to start the game on a pair of buckets by Jalen King, the latter of the two being a thunderous two-handed, crowd-pleasing dunk.

But the Bombers went to work from there, as Riley Sorn, Radliff, Beo and Kurtz all hit shots during an 8-0 run that put Richland ahead 8-4. The Bombers would never trail again.

“I thought we executed well on offense. We pretty much got anything we wanted,” Radliff said.

The Bombers extended their lead to 64-51 on Radliff’s three-point play with 1:51 left in the third quarter, but Chiawana found a way to scrap its way back into it. The Riverhawks cut the lead to 69-64 on Andrey Voloshin’s 3-pointer with 6 minutes left in the fourth, but Richland was able to maintain a healthy cushion.

Voloshin finished with 19 points, while three other Riverhawks’ players — King (12 points), Tre Joseph (11 points) and Chandler Hansen (11)

“There are six to eight plays in every game that are key. I thought Richland made them all, whether they were loose balls, rebounds or second-chance points” Herron said.

One emerging surprise for the Bombers has been the play of Kurtz, who hit 7 of 11 shots and led the team with 13 rebounds. Last year, Richland opponents had to game plan for Beo and Radliff. This year, they’ll have to work in a plan for Kurtz, too.

“He’s been taking a lot of pressure off me and Steven. He gets a lot of rebounds and putbacks,” Radliff said.
