Roundup: Hogan leads Wa-Hi girls to 48-39 win over Richland
Kate Hogan scored 22 points, and Walla Walla made 9 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter as the Blue Devils topped the Richland Bombers 48-39 on Saturday in the Mid-Columbia Conference opener for both teams.
Faith Hoe added 12 points and eight rebounds for Wa-Hi, though neither team was sharp from the field.
“We played really unsettled,” Richland coach Cindy McCoy said. “They did a good job putting pressure on us, and we didn’t handle it.”
Megan Haugen and Hailey Stevens each scored nine points to pace the Bombers.Stevens also pulled down six rebounds.

Swimming
Jeff Kern was first in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle, and Richland swept all three relays to win a boys double dual with Hanford (101-69) and host Walla Walla (110-60).
Hanford’s Brady Myers swam a Class 3A state-qualifying time of 53.39 seconds in the 100 butterfly, and he also won the 50 free to help the Falcons beat Wa-Hi 94-76.
Walla Walla’s Chris Yaw beat Hanford’s swimmers in the 200 and 500 free, and Calum Close had the day’s second-best time in the 100 breaststroke.

▪ Richland sophomore Claire Schaef completed the Speedo Winter Junior Championships-West in Austin, Texas.
In the women’s 1,650-yard free, the Tri-City Channel Cats club swimmer was 21st with a time of 17 minutes, 53.11 seconds. In the 200 butterfly preliminaries, Schaef was timed in 2:09.49 (66th overall).
Cross country
Keanu Daos of Southridge High School finished 50th in the 15-16 boys 5,000-meter run, leading the Tri City Thunder at the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
Daos was timed in 18:35.7, helping the Thunder place 12th in the team standings. Seven Thunder runners participated in the 15-16 boys 5,000, including Kennewick’s Johan Correa (60th, 18:43.5) and Richland’s Jesse Todd (67th, 18:49.7).
Bate Sadler of Richland was 99th out of 227 runners in the 8-and-under boys 2,000, finishing in 9:21.2.
