Tuesday prep roundup: Kennewick boys basketball team wins

Nico Benavidez scored a game-high 27 points —including five 3-pointers — to lead Kennewick to an 88-44 nonleague boys basketball win Tuesday over Eisenhower at the Lions Den.

The Lions led 54-22 at the half and never looked back in winning their season opener.

Leo Olmos added 16 points and five assists, while Sam Szendre chipped in 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.

Tyler Fitchett had 12 points for the Cadets, who shot a woeful 26.3 percent from the floor.

MOSES LAKE 65, SOUTHRIDGE 64: Host Southridge rallied hard in the fourth quarter, outscoring Moses Lake 23-8, but it wasn’t enough as the Suns dropped their season opener in a nonleague game to the Chiefs.

“We had a shot to win it with 3 seconds left, but couldn’t do it,” said Southridge coach DJ Traver. “To our credit, we didn’t give up.”

Indeed. Moses Lake built up a 57-41 lead heading into the final quarter before Southridge’s rally.

Gabe Vorheis led Southridge with 20 points, while Brad Morgan added 18. Cesar Sandoval paced Moses Lake with 32 points.
