Prep roundup, Oct. 27: Pasco tops Wa-Hi in district volleyball opener
The Pasco volleyball team wanted a strong start in its Class 4A District 5 tournament first-round match Tuesday against visiting Walla Walla, especially after losing the first set in three of its last four matches.
They got what they wanted, winning the first set en route to a 25-17, 25-11, 25-19 home victory to advance to the second round at 6 p.m. Thursday at Chiawana.
“It was a good start. We’ve been working on coming out strong,” Pasco coach Jackie Fluaitt said. “Walla Walla was digging up a ton of stuff, not letting anything hit the floor.”
Catelyn Linke and Ashlin Orosco combined for 33 kills to lead the Bulldogs, who lost both regular-season matches to Chiawana but pushed both contests to five sets.
“We’ve seen them before, and they’re a really great team,” Fluaitt said. “They run a lot in the middle, so we have to make sure we’re being aware. We’re going to have to work on coming out strong and closing the deal.”
Pasco setter Nancy Gonzalez had 24 assists.

HANFORD 3, KENNEWICK 1: The Falcons held off the visiting Lions to advance in the Class 3A District 5 tournament.
Mikal Sanchez had nine kills and seven aces, and Tasha Hungate had eight blocks to put Hanford in the second round against Southridge.
After winning the first two sets, the Falcons dropped the third and trailed 15-10 in the fourth before rallying for the win.
“They are really excited,” Hanford coach Nichelle Meador said of her team. “They came together as a team. There was a rough patch, but we pulled it together. We are excited to play on Thursday.
The Suns will host the Falcons at 5 p.m. Thursday in a loser-out match. Southridge swept Hanford during the regular season.
“We changed our lineup a bit,” Meador said. “I’m excited to see how that works out.”

PROSSER 3, EAST VALLEY 1: Brandi Groeneveld had 22 digs, and Hannah Lind and Shay Hicks each finished with eight kills as the host Mustangs wrapped up their regular season with a win over the Red Devils.
Prosser awaits district seeding after finishing 6-3 in the CWAC. The regular season ends Thursday.

Second-place Columbia-Burbank (8-2 SCAC East) and third-place River View (6-4) will move on to districts.

KIONA-BENTON 3, CONNELL 0: The Bears earned a share of the SCAC East title with a home sweep of the Eagles and secured the top seed to the Class 1A District 5 tournament beginning next Tuesday.
Kyrsten Whitmore led Ki-Be with 17 kills and five blocks, while Maloree Calzadillas chipped in 24 assists, 17 digs and three aces. Heather Hawkins had 15 kills to lead Connell, which holds the No. 4 seed to districts.

PASCO 4, WALLA WALLA 1: The Bulldogs avenged two consecutive seasons worth of playoff losses to the Blue Devils, cruising to a first-round win in the Class 4A District 5 tournament at Edgar Brown Stadium.
Megan Wilkinson was one of four Pasco players to score, adding an assist on Dani Gibson’s tally for good measure as the Bulldogs built a 3-0 lead after just 21 minutes.
“We played pretty well, I think. We didn’t lose in a shootout,” Pasco coach Justin Carey said, referencing his team’s past two district tournament results. “This time we put pressure on them early and passed the ball around pretty well. The girls were excited.”
The Bulldogs (7-10) will travel to face Richland (5-10) at 5 p.m. Thursday for the right to face Chiawana for the District 5 title on Saturday.
“We played pretty well against Richland this year,” Carey said.

CONNELL 1, WAHLUKE 0: Jessica Garcia scored the only goal of the match in the fourth minute, and the Eagles held off a scrappy Warriors squad in the SCAC East regular-season finale for both teams.
Connell (12-4) earned the No. 1 seed to the Class 1A District 5 tournament beginning Saturday. Kiona-Benton (8-1-1) is the No. 2, Wahluke (5-10) is the No. 3 and Royal (3-11-1) is No. 4.
“Jessica is one of the best players I’ve seen in a long time. We just gave her a little too much respect. We didn’t challenge her enough for that ball, and she got a shot off,” Warriors coach Arthur de Victoria said. “After that we settled down, and everyone started doing their job.”

KIONA-BENTON 2, GRANGER 0: Emily Thornton scored her team-leading 17th goal in the first half to lead the Bears to a road victory over the Spartans in the final SCAC game of the regular season.
Ki-Be (4-5-1), the No. 2 seed on the East side, will host Highland at 1 p.m. Saturday in the first round of the district playoffs. It is a loser-out game.
During the regular season, the Scotties beat the Bears 2-1 in their first game, then played to a 0-0 tie the second time around.
