Heather Donais is already a two-time state champion in track and field, but the Kamiakin senior forward certainly wouldn’t mind adding a district championship to that resume if she can.
Donais scored two first-half goals — her 13th and 14th of the season — and Rilee Castilla tacked on her eighth goal of the year in the second half as the Braves earned a 5-0 win over Kennewick in the Class 3A District 5 girls soccer tournament opener Monday at Lampson Stadium.
Kamiakin (12-4) also got goals from Mikaela Matkowski and Jessica Maher.
“I thought we had a lot of depth. We were able to bring people off the bench and maintain,” Braves coach Chris Erikson said. “We could be playing Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and Tuesday. That’s a lot of games, so we have to plan for it. We have to use everybody, and I thought they did a great job.”
Kamiakin’s Rachel McClure and Grace Wilbur split time in goal, making five combined saves for the shutout.
The contest also marked the final high school game of Hannah Templeton, Kennewick’s two-time all-Mid-Columbia Conference forward, who — along with the rest of her team — represented herself proudly to the end.
“Kudos to Kennewick. They’ve improved a ton, and it was good to see them playing hard to the end,” Erikson said.
The Braves will face No. 2 seed Hanford (12-4), with whom they split during the regular season, for a spot in Saturday’s district title match at Southridge (14-2).
“It’s going to be intense. Both teams want it bad,” Erikson said. “If you want to watch a nail-biter, be there on Wednesday.”
In the Class 4A tournament, No. 4 Walla Walla (0-14) will visit No. 3 Pasco (6-10) today at 6 p.m. at Edgar Brown Stadium.
