Tuesday local roundup: Southridge soccer beats Kamiakin, clinches MCC title

The host Southridge Suns broke open a scoreless first half to score three goals and beat Kamiakin 3-0 in Mid-Columbia Conference girls soccer play on Tuesday night.

The win gives the Suns the MCC title with a 12-1 record, with a regular-season match at noon at Pasco on Saturday.

Kelly Brown opened the scoring in the 49th minute. But Savannah Brown followed that with a goal three minutes later.

Ariana McKenzie finished the Southridge scoring with a goal in the 78th minute.

Suns keeper Tiara Valadez earned the shutout with 4 saves.

Southridge earns the top seed in the MCC 3A district tournament, and will play in the championship on Oct. 31. It was the second consecutive season the Suns are MCC regular-season champs.

“The biggest challenge for us this season was to play a little more consistent,” said Southridge coach Greg Sambrano. “We had to move some players around, figure out where they fit. So there was a lot of tinkering. We do have a lot of good players. We’re finding ways to score goals, but our defense is the strongest we have ever been.”

CHIAWANA 2, HANFORD 0: Chiawana got goals from its two big playmakers, and the Riverhawks shut out Hanford in an MCC match.

Summer Yates found a loose ball near the net and kicked it in at the 28-minute mark for Chiawana’s first goal.

Then in the 58th minute, Yates fed Braydey Hodgins for the Riverhawks’ second goal.

Hanford keeper Kelsee Winston was credited with nine saves.

Richland (5-8) will host Chiawana on Saturday to close out the regular season.

Lorena Ramirez had the lone goal for Walla Walla (0-13).

KENNEWICK 3, PASCO 2 (SO): The Lions prevailed with a 5-4 shootout victory over the Bulldogs in MCC action in Kennewick.

Reilyn Davis, Sydney Cook, Hannah Templeton, Stephanie Villamar and Kirren Day had shootout goals for the Lions.

Templeton had both of Kennewick’s goals in regulation, including the tying penalty kick in the 78th.

Lizeth Bustos and Jasmine McCarter each had a goal for Pasco. Bustos also scored in the shootout, as Kennewick’s Olivia Blank and Pasco’s Belle Bach battled it out in goal.

“It was a great game,” Kennewick coach Matt Kessie said. “It was a fun game to watch on both ends. They both played so well.”

Lemos also scored a goal for good measure, on an assist from Courtney Wells in the 86th minute, to give the Warriors a 3-1 lead.

“We started off slow, and we came back and were fighting really hard, and just couldn’t get it together to pull out the win,” said CBC coach Sandra Olin, whose team fell to 6-4 in the NWAC East.

Prep volleyball

RICHLAND 3, WALLA WALLA 0: The Bombers will play for the Mid-Columbia Conference title after sweeping the visiting Blue Devils.

Richland (12-1) will play at Chiawana (12-1) on Thursday, with the conference title and the top 4A seed to district on the line. The Bombers swept the Riverhawks the first time around.

“That’s the way it should be,” Richland coach Bob Raidl said of things going down to the wire. “You want to be playing well going into the tournaments. You can’t take anyone for granted.”

Kamry Breard led the Bombers with 18 kills and 17 assists, while Taylor Moody added 23 assts and Alaina Lacey 17 digs.

“At this point, there isn’t room for error,” Chiawana coach Jim Steach said. “It’s time to play and have fun.”

Tasha Hungate had four kills and seven blocks for Hanford (2-11), which finishes the season Thursday at Kennewick.

SOUTHRIDGE 3, KAMIAKIN 2: The Suns rallied from two sets down to beat the Braves on the road in MCC play.

“It was a miracle comeback,” said Suns coach John Lengphounpraseut, who noted his team hit .120 for the match. “The first two were convincing losses. Our kids responded after being down 2-0. We had a talk and it changed the whole match. It was a good win and I’m proud of my players.”

After Kamiakin (8-5) won the first two sets 25-13, 25-17, Southridge (8-5) stormed back and finished the match with a 15-11 victory in the final set.

“It was a good game,” said Kamiakin coach Morgan Schauble, whose team will finish the regular season Thursday at Walla Walla.

Riley Hebdon had 15 kills for Southridge (8-5), which has won five matches in a row. Makenna Behrens added 14 kills and 30 digs.

Madison Judy led the Braves with 19 kills, while Allison Stapleton added 13 kills and Kennedy Sarver 41 assists.

ELLENSBURG 93, SOUTHRIDGE 86: Southridge got wins from Megan Hopkins (200-yard individual medley), Cleo Tolman (diving) and the 200 freestyle relay, but the Suns lost to the Bulldogs in a nonleague meet in Ellensburg.

Southridge freshman Hilary Petersen was second to Ellensburg’s Alicia Hummel in the 50 free by five one-hundredths of a second. Petersen (26.31) beat out Ellensburg’s Krista Wilson, who finished in 27.09 for third place. Wilson was last year’s Class 2A state runner-up in the 100 free.

In another nonleague meet, Hanford beat host Clarkston 109-35, while Richland defeated the Bantams 105-31. No other details were available.
