The Kamiakin Braves defense had its hands full trying to shut down Chiawana forwards Braydey Hodgins and Summer Yates.

But a good plan and even better execution by the Braves defenders allowed them to come away with a 1-0 Mid-Columbia Conference girls soccer victory Tuesday in Pasco.

“Our defense was outstanding. The whole game we played smart and clean, and they did a great job on Summer,” Kamiakin coach Chris Erikson said. “You have to be careful with her. She’s great at using her body and drawing fouls.”

Rilee Castilla scored in the second minute to put Kamiakin up 1-0, controlling a pass from Rylie Clark and beating Chiawana goalkeeper Cydni Cottrell.

The win keeps the Braves (8-2, 7-2 MCC) locked in a second-place tie with Hanford (8-3, 7-2) behind Southridge (9-2, 8-1).

“My goal is to end up in a two-way tie if Southridge loses again,” Erikson said. “But I don’t know who will beat them.”

Scoring: 1, K, Rilee Castilla (Rylie Clark), 1:45. Shots: K 16, C 7. Saves: K, Grace Wilbur 4. C, Cydni Cottrell 12.

PASCO 3, RICHLAND 2 (OT): The host Bulldogs recorded a rare win over the Bombers — their first since 2009 — when Alexis Eubanks poked in her own rebound on a header following a well-placed corner kick by Jaidyn Alexander in the eighth minute of overtime.

“It was a pretty big deal. We haven’t beaten them in quite a while,” Pasco coach Justin Carey said. “The girls played hard for 88 minutes tonight, probably as hard as I’ve seen them play all season. They were warriors out there.”

The Bulldogs took the lead twice on goals by Lizeth Bustos (23rd minute) and Megan Wilkinson (35th minute), but Richland equalized both times, getting tallies from Samantha Heilman (29th) and Sophia Mendoza (48th).

The Bulldogs then pushed the Braves to the brink in Game 4, but Kamiakin pulled out a 32-30 victory.

“We changed up our rotation in the third, and it was amazing,” Fluaitt said. “We worked as an entire unit. They were picking up balls all over the court. It was a fun match. I don’t mind losing when we play hard. I loved what we did today. Beside the loss, it was forward progress. I am excited.”
