Mid-Columbia roundup for Oct. 3: Kamiakin’s Fishburn finishes third at Sunfair Invitational

Kamiakin cross country runner Phillip Fishburn was third in the 3-mile race for No. 1 runners at the Sunfair Invitational on Saturday in Yakima.

Fishburn was timed in 15 minutes, 38.68 seconds on the Franklin Park course, finishing behind Tahoma’s Graeme Schroeder (15:29.20) and Anacortes’ Dylan Holland (15:32.87).

On the girls side, Braves runner Lindsey Lowe was 18th in 19:59.76.

In the races for No. 2 runners, Kamiakin’s Jonah Franco was fifth (16:25.66) and McKinzi Teeples ninth (19:53.89).

Mirannda Shulman was seventh for the Braves in the No. 3 girls race with her time of 19:58.30.

Kamiakin got third-place finishes from Ryan Child (No. 5 boys) and Traven Bills (No. 6), while Kyler Lee was seventh in the race for No. 7 runners.

Cortni Bisson was fifth in the No. 6 girls race, and Brooke Moon was eighth in the No. 4 race.

PASCO BULLDOG INVITE: Umatilla’s Fabian Cardenas won the boys varsity-large school race with a 5,000-meter time of 15.53.9 — his second fastest of the season — at Big Cross in Pasco.

Kennewick and Richland tied for second in the standings with 96 points, well behind winner Lewiston’s 26. The Bengals swept the next three spots behind Cardenas and also had runners finish seventh and 13th.

Pasco’s Ismael Castaneda was fifth (17:19.0), followed by Richland’s Cody Sloan (17:41.3). Kennewick’s top runner was No. 14 Johan Correa (18:29.8).

In the boys varsity-small school race, Tri-Cities Prep took third, led by seventh-place Phillip Geist (17:24.2).

The Mid-Columbia’s top small-school runner was Bickleton’s Andrew Gannon, who finished fifth in 17:04.7.

On the girls side, Sunnyside won the large-school race with 31 points, six ahead of runner-up Chiawana. The Grizzlies’ Dallas Borrego took second in 20:32.3, followed by teammate Jeniya Guillen (20:36.8). Chiawana’s Samantha Schmidt (21:18.8) was fourth.

Waitsburg-Prescott’s Emily Adams finished first in the small-school race with a time of 19:52.7. Tri-Cities Prep was third in the team standings, with the Jaguars’ Celeste Davis (21:46.4) taking sixth.

Southridge was fourth in the girls standings, as Lindsey Wooley, Lizzie Stites and Brooke Hansen finished in the top 17.

MUKILTEO INVITE: Richland’s Katie Schroder and Kennewick’s Alexis Murphy earned state-qualifying times in a fast 100-yard breaststroke in Federal Way.

The top five times in the event were under the Class 4A state standard of 1 minute, 9.90 seconds. Schroder finished fourth in 1:09.64, and Murphy, of the Class 3A Lions, was fifth in 1:09.82.

Defending team champion Richland finished fifth with 350 points — Bainbridge won with 712.5 — but the Bombers were buoyed by Lauren Hall, who was fourth in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Alyssa Musick was seventh in the 200 individual medley, and Kelsey Olsen placed fourth in diving. The Bombers were second in the 200 medley relay and eighth in the 200 and 400 free.

The Mid-Columbia’s top individual finisher was Kamiakin’s Saige Polanik, who took second in diving with a score of 197.40.

Hanford’s Megan Gelston was sixth in the 100 back, and teammate Maddie Elliott finished eighth in the 500 free.

Murphy was eighth in the 100 fly.

HANFORD 2, SOUTHRIDGE 1 (SO): Chelsea Marozik tied the score for the Falcons in the 60th minute and then nailed a spot kick in Hanford’s shootout win over the host Suns.

All five Falcons shooters — Ellie Harlow, Marozik, Hannah Thompson, Sadie Newsom and Taylor Matheny — converted their opportunities in the shootout, and Hanford (7-3 overall, 6-2 Mid-Columbia Conference) stayed tied with Kamiakin (7-2, 6-2) for second place in the MCC, one game behind Southridge (8-2, 7-1).

“It was a hard-fought game. I don’t think there was a dominant team, but our girls believed we could win no matter what,” Falcons coach Kaylie Winston said. “(Goalkeeper) Kelsee (Winston) kept us in the game with some big saves.”

KAMIAKIN 3, RICHLAND 0: Maddie Morgan scored the first of her two goals in the third minute, and Grace Wilbur stopped three shots as the Braves shut out the host Bombers.

“I thought we played smart,” Kamiakin coach Chris Erikson said. “I thought our game management was very good in terms of doing what we needed to do when we needed to do it.”

Richland’s Gracelyn Fine made 11 saves against 22 Kamiakin shots.

Grandview had an 11-3 shot advantage during regulation and overtime, but it could not get the ball past Othello keeper Giselle Monroy.

LINDA SHERIDAN CLASSIC: Breanna Shaffer chalked up 38 kills and 46 digs, and Julisa Gonzalez collected 86 digs and six aces as Kennewick went 2-4 to finish ninth in the silver bracket in Spokane.

“We stepped up a lot against Cascade. We figured out our groove and what we’re capable of,” Lions coach Julie Maciboba said. “That was nice to see.”

Richland was ninth in the gold bracket (25th overall) after two wins and three losses, including a one-set defeat by Tahoma.

Kamry Breard had 30 kills, 36 assists and 26 digs for the Bombers, and Lexi Lacey finished with 32 kills and 30 digs. Taylor Moody racked up 63 assists, 23 digs and seven aces, while Alaina Lacey dug up 58 balls.

“There’s always good stuff, but we talked to the team afterward, and they felt it was a C day, kind of an average day,” said coach Bob Raidl, whose team is 8-0 in the Mid-Columbia Conference. “We’re not an average team. We just weren’t satisfied with our performance.”
