Swimming and volleyball roundup for Saturday, Sept. 12: Richland’s Schaef qualifies for state

Richland High School sophomore Claire Schaef won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle at the Champions Invitational on Saturday in Moses Lake, qualifying for state in both events.

Schaef was timed in 1 minute, 58.81 seconds in the 200 and 5:17.86 in the 500.

Richland senior Kelsea Hinkley won the diving competition with 177.30 points.

Other top-10 finishers for Richland were Katie Schroder (fourth, 100 breaststroke; eighth, 200 individual medley), Kelsey Olsen (fourth, diving), Lauren Hall (eighth, 100 butterfly), Marcia Kim (eighth, 100 backstroke) and Alyssa Whittington (ninth, diving). The Bombers took fourth in the 200 medley relay and fifth in the 200 and 400 free.

Hanford’s top-10 placers were Maha Fathali (seventh, 100 breast), Amanda Andersen (eighth, diving), Maddie Elliott (eighth, 100 breast; ninth, 100 free) and Megan Gelston (ninth, 100 fly). The Falcons were sixth in the 200 free relay.

Newport won the team race with 907 points. Defending Class 4A state co-champion Richland was fourth (575), and Hanford took eighth (286).

RICHLAND TWILIGHT MEET: Richland opened the season Friday night at George Prout Pool with a relay sweep and individual wins by BreAnn Bell (50 back), Hinkley (diving) and Neomi Mennetrot (50 fly).

Kennewick senior Alexis Murphy won the 100 breast and 100 fly, while Walla Walla sophomore Paige Gardner took the 100 back and 50 free. Hanford freshman Fathali was first in the 50 breast.

The meet featured all six Mid-Columbia Conference teams, Prosser, Grandview, Mabton, Cheney and Clarkston.

Volleyball

KIONA-BENTON 3, KITTITAS 2: Momo Calzadillas went 11-for-11 from the service line and racked up 41 digs, while Kyrsten Whitmore finished with 19 kills and nine blocks to lead the visiting Bears in nonleague action.
