Mid-Columbia roundup for Saturday, Sept. 5

Southridge forward Kelly Brown scored the tying goal in the 48th minute off an assist from Haley Thomas, but Mercer Island responded with two unanswered goals to record a 3-1 girls soccer victory Saturday in Kennewick.

“They pretty much dominated us,” Southridge coach Greg Sambrano said. “We knew they were going to be good.”

The Suns are playing without their 2014 scoring leader, McKaley Goffard, who was lost for the season when she suffered an injury during a club game this summer.

GRANDVIEW 3, SUNNYSIDE 1: The Greyhounds scored the first three goals of the game en route to a nonleague win over the host Grizzlies (0-2).

Crystal Jacobo scored the opening goal for Grandview, while keeper Anabel Pallares finished with eight saves.

Cross country

RUNNERS SOUL FESTIVAL: Hermiston won the boys team title with 63 points, and Southridge was second with 96 at Sandstone Middle School in Hermiston.

Umatilla’s Fabian Cardenas claimed the individual crown, completing the 5,000-meter course in 16 minutes, 22.8 seconds. Hermiston’s Josiah Niederwerfer (17:04.2) finished sixth.

Oregon City raced to the girls title with 51 points, while Hermiston took seventh with 145. Pendleton’s Delaney Clem was the individual champion with a time of 20:02.6.

Prep volleyball

RICHLAND JAMBOREE: Host Richland, Pasco, and Chiawana each went 4-1, Kennewick 2-3, Hanford 1-4 and Sunnyside 0-5.

GRANDVIEW INVITE: Grandview dropped a 25-22, 25-22 match to East Valley, then beat Prosser 25-15, 14-25, 25-21.

Suzie Medina led Grandview with 19 digs, three kills and two aces on the day, while Cassidy Eucher had nine kills and 14 digs. Evann Swearingen finished with four aces, four kills and nine assists, and Madison Diener recorded five kills and five blocks.

College volleyball

SPOKANE INVITATIONAL: Columbia Basin lost to Big Bend (25-21, 25-15, 23-25, 25-19) and to Walla Walla (25-10, 25-20, 25-19) at Spokane Falls Community College.

The Hawks went 1-4 at the tournament, with its lone win coming Friday against Wenatchee Valley (26-24, 25-19, 22-25, 25-21).

Walla Walla defeated Wenatchee Valley on Saturday (28-30, 25-23, 25-16, 25-8). The Warriors went 1-2 on Friday, beating Big Bend and losing to Highline and Linn-Benton.
