Hanford, Richland boys swim teams ready to battle for shot at state competition

Hanford and Richland boys swim teams are moving into the postseason with district competition set for this weekend. Several local athletes expected to contend for spots at the Class 4A state championships later this month.

Hanford enters districts as one of the Mid-Columbia Conference’s strongest programs after finishing the regular season 16 and 2 and placing second in the conference standings. The Falcons also won the MCC championship meet and are the defending District 6 4A champions.

Several Hanford swimmers earned postseason recognition and are expected to advance beyond districts. Senior Erwin Abringe was named first team all conference in the 200-meter freestyle and second team in the 100 backstroke. Alvin Liu earned first team all conference honors in the 50 freestyle, while junior Aiden Wang was recognized in both the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke and is projected to qualify for state in both events.

Hanford’s relay teams are also expected to play a major role. The Falcons’ 200 medley, 200 freestyle, and 400 freestyle relays all earned second team all conference honors and are projected to advance to the state meet.

Richland finished fourth in the Mid Columbia Conference team standings and placed fourth at the MCC championships, sending several individual athletes into the district meet.

Junior Porter Williams leads the Bombers’ postseason hopes in diving. Williams earned first team all conference honors, has already qualified for state with a score of 331.10 points, and placed 14th at state last season. He is also chasing Richland’s school record.

Richland will also be represented by multiple underclassmen at districts, including freshman Scott Kreutz, who earned honorable mention all conference recognition in the 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle, and freshman Aidan Treml, who earned second team all conference honors in the 100 freestyle and is projected to advance to state.

District competition will be held Feb. 6 and 7, with qualifiers advancing to the Class 4A state swim and dive championships scheduled for Feb. 20 and 21 in Seattle.
