Prosser boys, girls roll over quarterfinal opponents in 2A. 6 others aren’t out yet
Five Mid-Columbia teams won their state quarterfinal games on Thursday to advance to the semifinals in their respective tournaments.
The Prosser boys and girls won in the 2A state tournaments, as did the Royal boys in 1A, Columbia-Burbank in 2B boys, and the DeSales boys in 1B.
The Richland (4A) and Tri-Cities Prep (2B) boys lost, as did the Chiawana (4A), Kennewick (3A), Mabton (2B) and Sunnyside Christian (1B) girls.
The good news is that those teams can still earn a state trophy if they can win on Friday.
Here’s a look at how the region’s teams did on Thursday:

Prosser coach Toby Cox called his No. 10 Mustangs’ quarterfinal win over No. 1 Lynden on Thursday perhaps his program’s biggest victory ever.
Prosser, facing the three-time state champs, forced the Lions into 20 turnovers en route to a 64-50 upset victory. The Mustangs outscored Lynden 24-8 in points off of turnovers.
“That was a good win for our program,” said Cox. “I just liked our effort, and we attacked the paint.”
Koby McClure led Prosser with 22 points and 4 steals, while Landon Bailey had 19 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals. Trent Russell added 8 points and 10 rebounds for the Mustangs.
Cox said McClure is 20 points from reaching the career 2000-point mark.
The game was close at intermission, with Lynden leading 31-30. But Prosser outscored Lynden 19-5 in the third quarter, and that was the difference.
The win sets up a semifinal game against Central Washington Athletic Conference rival Selah at 3:45 p.m. Friday in the Yakima Valley SunDome.
The Vikings, ranked fifth in the seeding, took down No. 11 Columbia River 74-49 in their quarterfinal.
Selah and Prosser have already played each other four times this season. They split their two regular-season games, but Selah won twice in the district tournament.
Cox has enjoyed this season because his team toughened up after a holiday trip to Arizona.
“They saw teams they never had before,” he said. “And that Grandview rivalry we have is always a great atmosphere. It’ll be a great atmosphere (at the SunDome) against Selah.”
No. 3 Bremerton meets No. 2 R.A. Long in the other semifinal at 5:30 p.m.
