On the girls side, Mabton meets Tri-Cities Prep at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at La Salle High for a seeding game into district.

Also at 11 a.m., Saturday, at La Salle, Warden’s girls meet Kittitas in a winner-to-district, loser-out contest.

College basketball

Senior MeiLani McBee is the third-leading scorer for the University of Hawaii women’s basketball team this season.

On Jan. 26, the Kennewick High School graduate played in her 127th game for the Rainbow Wahine — a school record and continually climbing with each game she plays.

McBee is averaging 6.7 points a game for the Wahine (16-6 through Feb. 6). She is shooting 32 percent from the 3-point line, making 32 of 100 attempts.

Prep volleyball

Royal senior Madisen Christensen was named this fall to the 1A South Central Athletic Conference first-team volleyball squad as an outside hitter.

College Place had two first-team stars in senior setter Mia Ferraro and junior libero Lucinda Weaver.

Connell senior Kennedy Hailey also was a first-team selection at outside hitter/setter.

Cashmere sophomore outside hitter Macie Smart was named SCAC Player of the Year, while Cashmere’s Katie Broadbent was named SCAC Coach of the Year.

College signing

Prosser High senior Landon Bailey caught the eye of college scouts this past season while playing for the Mustangs football team.

Bailey caught 69 passes this season for 892 yards (an average of 12.9 yards per catch) for 17 touchdowns.

Bailey committed to Portland State University for this coming fall. At 6-foot-6, Bailey will make a big target as a receiver.

College men’s soccer

Senior midfielder Raymundo Mendez (CBC) scored 13 goals in 17 games this past fall for the Seattle Pacific University.

That was good enough for Mendez to be named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year by the conference’s men’s soccer coaches.

Mendez — who was also named to the first team — was named the 2023 GNAC Newcomer of the Year last season.

Mendez had three other teammates from the Mid-Columbia region: redshirt freshman keeper Diego Cossio (Hanford), junior forward Orlando Erazo (Wahluke), and junior defender Alexander Magana (CBC).
