Tri-Cities swimmers and divers win district titles. They’re headed to WA championships

The WIAA girls state swimming and diving state championships don’t happen until Nov. 12-14 in Federal Way.

But Mid-Columbia swimmers performed well at the district meet last weekend in Kelso. Enough, in fact, that some came out winners of their events.

We’ll start with Richland senior Giulia Squeri, who won the 4A girls 50 free (24.83 seconds) and 100 free (54.65 seconds) titles.

Squeri also swam the anchor leg of the Bombers’ winning 200 freestyle relay. The team also included juniors Darrah Lerch and Malia Ciolli and sophomore Kaitlyn Prigge. Their time was 1 minute, 44.81 seconds.

In the 4A 1-meter diving competition, Hanford junior Corinne Hatch finished first with a point total of 326.70.

In the 3A district meet, also in Kelso, Walla Walla senior Lana Miller and Southridge junior Paisley Walkley were double winners.

Miller finished first in the 100 back (59.93 seconds) and the 100 fly (59.52 seconds).

Walkley placed first in the 200 free (1:59.98) and the 500 free (5:22.19).

Kennewick sophomore Delaney Rush won the 1-meter diving event with 261.05 points.

Next week, I’ll share all of our region’s state qualifiers.

Southeast 1B football

Last weekend, DeSales routed Garfield-Palouse 76-8, while Liberty Christian had the weekend off.

What it means for the Southeast 1B eight-man football teams — DeSales and Liberty Christian, that is — is that both teams have identical 7-0 conference standings, and 8-0 overall.

So it seems fitting that the two should meet in the final week of the regular season on Friday to determine the conference champion.

The game is set for 7 p.m. at Hanford High School.

Both teams will qualify for the state 1B playoffs, which begin Nov. 11-12.

A third team in the conference should also qualify for the state playoffs.
