Final week of Tri-Cities high school spring sports has 14 teams vying for WA state titles
Fourteen area teams are advancing into the final weekend of state high school sports for this school year.
That includes the Kennewick and Richland baseball teams, the Pasco boys soccer squad, and 11 fastpitch softball teams.
Here is a look at who is playing, who was eliminated in district or regional play, and where everyone is this coming weekend.
Baseball
Class 4A: Richland won two games this past Saturday in the regionals at Richland High School.
The No. 4-seeded Bombers opened the first round by beating No. 13 Mount Si 12-2, then taking down No. 5 Moses Lake 2-0.
Richland now qualifies for the state 4A semifinals, which will be played at Gesa Stadium in Pasco on Friday and Saturday.
The Bombers will take on No. 1 Olympia at 12:45 p.m. Friday in one semifinal, while No. 14 Skyline plays No. 2 Puyallup in the other semifinal at 9:30 a.m.
Winners from both games will meet in the 4A state championship game at 4 p.m. Saturday at Gesa.
Losers play for third place at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
▪ No. 6 seed Kamiakin fell 3-1 to No. 11 Sumner in the first round of regionals last Saturday in Yakima.
▪ No. 16 Chiawana dropped its regional opener, falling 3-1 at No. 1 Olympia on Saturday.
Class 3A: Kennewick brought its bats to the regionals last Saturday, as the No. 3 Lions routed Eastside Catholic 13-3, then pounded No. 6 Lincoln of Seattle 19-6 in the quarterfinals in Yakima.
Because of that, Kennewick will play in the 3A state final four at Gesa Stadium in Pasco, meeting No. 10 Mount Spokane in one semifinal at 4 p.m..
The other semifinal Friday will pit No. 12 Mercer Island against top-ranked West Seattle.
Friday’s winners will meet at Gesa Stadium at 7:15 p.m. Saturday for the state title, while the losers will play for third place at 12:45 p.m. Saturday.
▪ No. 8 Walla Walla ended up two runs shy of advancing to the state semifinals.
The Blue Devils opened regional play in Bellevue by blanking No. 9 Bonney Lake 3-0. But Wa-Hi saw its season end, as it lost to No. 1 West Seattle 6-5 in the quarterfinals.
Class 1A: No. 6 College Place and No. 10 Royal each won their first-round games Saturday before being ousted in the quarterfinals.
In Wenatchee, College Place beat No. 11 Klahowya 5-2, before falling 14-1 to No. 3 Chelan.
In Anacortes, Royal ended No. 7 La Center’s season by a 7-6 score in the first round. But the Knights’ season then ended in the quarterfinals when they lost 8-3 to No. 2 Bellevue Christian.
Class 2B: No. 6 Tri-Cities Prep and No. 15 Warden both had their seasons end in the first round of the regionals.
Prep lost 9-1 to No. 11 Okanogan in Spokane, while the Cougars fell 10-2 at No. 2 Brewster.
Class 1B: No. 1 DeSales and No. 5 Liberty Christian were eliminated from further play on Saturday.
DeSales beat No. 8 Odessa 11-1 in the quarterfinals at Borleske Stadium in Walla Walla, but then lost to No. 4 Crosspoint 10-7 in the state semifinals.
Liberty Christian stopped No. 12 Sunnyside Christian 5-3 in a play-in game last Tuesday in Richland. But the Patriots were eliminated at Borleske on Saturday, falling 4-0 to Crosspoint in the quarterfinals.
Boys soccer
Class 4A: No. 1-ranked Pasco beat No. 9 Camas 3-1 in the state quarterfinals at Edgar Brown on Saturday.
The Bulldogs advance to the Final Four at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup, and they’ll play No. 15 Bellarmine Prep at 6 p.m. on Friday.
The other semifinal will pit No. 3 Wenatchee against No. 7 Skyline at 4 p.m.
Friday’s winners will meet at 5 p.m. Saturday in the state championship, while Friday’s losers will play for third place at noon Saturday.
Class 2A: No. 9 Othello fell 3-0 to No. 1 Columbia Rivers in the state quarterfinals.
Class 1A: No. 6 Connell routed No. 11 Bellevue Christian 5-1 on Friday in Quincy. But the Eagles then lost the next day in the quarterfinals, falling 1-0 to Seattle Academy.
Meanwhile, No. 10 Wahluke dropped a 1-0, first-round game against No. 7 Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls at Sammamish High School last Friday.
Fastpitch softball
Class 4A: The 16-team state tournament is in Spokane, and the Mid-Columbia Conference has three teams involved: No. 10 Kamiakin plays No. 7 Eastmont at 10 a.m. Friday; No. 13 Chiawana takes on No. 4 Puyallup at noon, Friday; and No. 16 Hanford meets No. 1 Kentwood at noon, Friday.
Last Saturday, in the District 8 championship, Kamiakin beat Hanford 11-0. Chiawana qualified Saturday for state by beating Richland 11-9, then blasting Gonzaga Prep 15-0.
Class 3A: Walla Walla is the top seed and will open play at the state tournament in Lacey at 2 p.m. Friday.
The Blue Devils will await the winner of No. 17 Eastside Catholic vs. No. 16 Marysville-Getchell, who meet at 9 a.m. in a loser-out, play-in game.
Meanwhile, Kennewick survived Saturday’s district play to earn the last District 8 state berth. The Lions are seeded 18th, and will meet No. 15 Auburn Riverside at 9 a.m. Friday in a play-in game in Lacey.
Class 2A: Othello is the third Mid-Columbia team ranked No. 1 in their respective softball state tournaments.
The Huskies play No. 16 West Valley of Spokane at 12 p.m. Friday in the first round of state tournament play at Carlon Park in Selah.
Class 1A: This state tournament is being played at Columbia Playfield in Richland, and College Place is ranked No. 3, while Royal is No. 9.
College Place gets a first-round bye in the 12-team tournament, and the Hawks open play at 3 p.m. Friday. They’ll await the winner from the winner of the 12 p.m. matchup against either No. 6 Mount Baker and No. 11 Klahowya.
Royal opens play against No. 8 Castle Rock at 12 p.m. Friday.
Class 2B: No. 2 Warden is the lone area representative at this 12-team tournament, which is at the Gateway Sports Complex in Yakima. The Cougars open play at 2 p.m. against the winner of an earlier matchup featuring No. 10 Rainier and No. 7 Liberty of Spangle.
Class 1B: This 8-team tournament features No. 1 Liberty Christian of Richland, which opens quarterfinal play against No. 8 Darrington.
No. 4 DeSales takes on No. 5 Naselle in another quarterfinal. Both games start at noon on Friday at the Gateway Sports Complex in Yakima.
