Pasco, Prosser girls advance to state basketball semifinals; Kamiakin boys lose to Union
The Pasco girls’ quest for a 4A state high school basketball championship averted disaster when the Bulldogs hung on to defeat Lake Stevens 37-35 on Thursday.
The third-seeded Bulldogs got 16 points and 7 rebounds from senior Taija Mackey, while Mireyah Lopez added 12 points and 6 boards for the victory over No. 4 seed Lake Stevens.
Pasco outscored Lake Stevens 18-8 in points off of turnovers.
The Bulldogs will play No. 2 Sumner at 5:30 p.m. today in the Tacoma Dome in the state semifinals.
2A girls
(11) PROSSER 57, (5) ARCHBISHOP MURPHY 36: The Prosser girls advanced into the state semifinals on Thursday in the Yakima Valley SunDome, as senior Halle Wright scored 27 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.
The Mustangs outscored the Wildcats 34-12 in the second half to gain control.
Freshman Laylee Dixon added 10 points and 5 rebounds for Prosser, which will take on No. 8 seeded Burlington-Edison at 3:45 p.m. today in the semifinals.
4A boys
(3) UNION 57, (4) KAMIAKIN 41: The Kamiakin boys’ search for the state title ended Thursday night with a loss to the Titans in the Tacoma Dome.
Union outscored Kamiakin 13-4 in the fourth quarter to clinch the win.
Senior Tyler Bilodeau led the Braves with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Peter Dress added 10 points and 5 boards.
Kamiakin can still place as high as fourth, and the Braves will play No. 8 Gonzaga Prep at 2 p.m. today.
4A girls
(1)WOODINVILLE 45, (7) RICHLAND 33: Kylee Fox scored 14 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as the Bombers lost their quarterfinal game against top seed Woodinville.
Woodinville outrebounded Richland 48-31.
Richland was playing No. 6 Emerald Ridge at 9 a.m. Thursday in a loser-out game.
2A boys
(4) PULLMAN 78, (14) PROSSER 48: Upstart Prosser saw its run for a state title end in Yakima, falling to Pullman.
Pullman outscored Prosser 27-3 in the third quarter to put the game away.
Koby McClure led the Mustangs with 13 points.
Prosser plays No. 7 Port Angeles today at 12:15 p.m.
2B boys
(1)KALAMA 61, (10) COLUMBIA-BURBANK 57: Top seed Kalama took advantage of its height to outscore Burbank 36-26 in the paint and win their quarterfinal matchup at the Spokane Arena.
Freshman Quincy Scott led the Coyotes with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Burbank plays No. 11 Toutle Lake at 12:15 p.m. today.
2B girls
(2) WARDEN 61, (1) LA CONNER 48: The Madsen sisters led the Cougars to victory and a spot in the state semifinals in Spokane Arena.
Warden outscored La Conner 25-16 in the fourth quarter, and outscored them 14-3 in points off of turnovers.
Lauren Madsen led the Cougars with 25 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 steals; Jaryn Madsen added 14 points and 9 rebounds.
The Cougars take on No. 4 Okanogan at 3:45 p.m. today in the semifinals.
1B boys
(5) SUNNYSIDE CHRISTIAN 39, (6) MOSES LAKE CHRISTIAN/COVENANT 36: Sunnyside Christian outscored Moses Lake Christian/Covenant 15-10 in the fourth quarter to win the quarterfinal game and move on to the semifinals.
Cole Wagenaar led SSC with 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists.
SSC will play No. 2 Cusick at 5:30 p.m. today in the Spokane Arena.
(2) CUSICK 74, (8) DESALES 65: Joe Baffney scored 27 points, and Jack Lesko and Ryan Chase added 14 each, but it wasn’t enough as DeSales lost its quarterfinal game to Cusick in the Spokane Arena.
The Irish will play a loser-out game against Moses Lake Christian/Covenant at 10:30 a.m. today.
