Kennewick football standout Mayovsky verbally commits to EWU
Kennewick High senior Myles Mayovsky made it semi-official earlier this month when he verbally committed to play football for Eastern Washington University.
To make it official, Mayovsky will have to sign his letter of intent to EWU in early February.
Eastern wants to place him with its linebacking corps — which is what it is doing with Richland High senior Elijah Rodriguez, who signed with EWU back in November.
Mayovsky helped lead the Lions to the Class 3A state championship game in December. Kennewick fell to Bellevue in the title game.
Mayovsky amassed over 2300 total yards on offense. The star running back also accounted for 26 touchdowns.
- Injuries kept him sidelined much of the season, but Southridge senior running back Albersh Kuwa still has a chance to play college football. Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore., has offered Kuwa a scholarship to play for the Boxers.
- Kamiakin senior lineman Jaxin McCallum has garnered six offers to play football next fall at some small-school universities. McCallum, a first-team offensive lineman for the Mid-Columbia Conference, has offers from: College of Idaho, Mount Marty, Olivet Nazarene, South Dakota Mines, Western Oregon, and Whitworth.
Boys basketball
Columbia-Burbank’s boys fell from the ranks of the unbeaten when the Coyotes lost at Class 1B DeSales 61-58 in overtime on Tuesday.
That drops Burbank to 13-1 on the season and at No. 7 in the Boys Class 2B RPI rankings.
Still, the Coyotes are atop the EWAC East standings with just a few weeks to go.
Here are the boys standings:
Columbia-Burbank 5-0 EWAC, 13-1 overall
Tri-Cities Prep 4-1, 7-6
River View 2-4, 2-13
Warden 1-2, 2-9
Walla Walla Valley Academy 1-3, 3-6
Dayton-Waitsburg 1-4, 3-8
Girls basketball
Despite shutting its program down for 10 days because of COVID protocols, Warden is still unbeaten at 3-0 in EWAC East play, and 10-0 overall.
EWAC protocols usually call for a forfeit if a game is cancelled due to COVID. But the league’s website does not reflect that yet.
So here is the EWAC East girls standings as of Jan. 19:
Warden 3-0 EWAC, 10-0 overall
Columbia-Burbank 4-1, 11-3
Tri-Cities Prep 3-2, 8-4
WWVA 2-2, 4-5
River View 2-4, 2-13
Dayton-Waitsburg 0-5, 0-11
Girls swimming
Playing catchup from fall sports, Richland High senior Bryan McGinnis was named the Mid-Columbia Conference girls swimmer of the year by the conference coaches. Teammate Isabella Zumini, a sophomore, was named diver of the year.
Kennewick’s Trine Tippett and Walla Walla’s Nancy Rose were named Co-Swim Coaches of the year, while Hanford’s Mitch Piper was Diving Coach of the Year.
McGinnis was named to the first team in the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle events, and was second team on the 200 free relay and the 400 free relay teams.
Hanford had a number of standouts.
Sophomore Noelle Landon led the Falcons with four first-team mentions: 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, and she was part of the top 200 medley relay and 400 free relay teams.
Hanford senior Cameron Rutherford was a first-team selection in the 100 backstroke, as well as being part of the three first-team relay squads for the Falcons: 200 medley, 200 free and 400 free relays. Rutherford was also second-team in the 200 individual medley.
Hanford freshman Annika Peterson was named first team in the 200 freestyle, and on the relays for the 200 medley, 200 free and 400 free. Peterson was also an honorable mention selection in the 500 freestyle event.
Finally, Southridge junior Liesl Telquist earned first team honors in the 200 individual medley, and she was honorable mention in the 100 freestyle, as well as the 200 medley relays and 400 free relay.
Girls bowling
Haven’t seen any updated standings lately, but at last check in mid-December, Kennewick is on top of the Mid-Columbia Conference girls bowling standings and were unbeaten at 9-0.
The Lions have three of the MCC’s top five bowlers: Caidence Richardson is averaging 171.6 pins a game, while Paige Harns is at 169, and Kassandra Foss is at 167.
Kamiakin’s Hayden Bennett is the MCC leader with a pinball average at 178. She’s followed by Richland’s Malia Haynes at 171.7 pins.
- The WIAA made some changes for the upcoming state championships at Narrows Plaza Bowl at University Place.
For one, each classification tournament is now a one-day affair, in an attempt to minimize the number of bowlers, parents and fans at the facility.
The 3A state tournament will be on Thursday, Feb. 3; the 1A/2A tournament is set for Friday, Feb. 4; and the 4A tournament is now on Saturday, Feb. 5.
The MCC Championships to determine who goes to state is set for Jan. 27 at the highest seed’s facility.
