The Richland girls soccer team continues to get better.

Bombers head coach Justin Almquist led his team to a perfect 16-0 Mid-Columbia Conference record this fall, and the team becomes the top seed in the District 8 4A tournament, which begins this week.

Richland gets a bye until Saturday, and will play the winner of Tuesday’s Chiawana at Central Valley playoff game.

The other half of the bracket has Kamiakin playing host to Lewis & Clark on Tuesday, with the winner traveling to play Gonzaga Prep.

The tournament continues into next week, with the top three placers qualifying for the state tourney.

Meanwhile, Hermiston, Southridge and Walla Walla are all involved in the District 8 3A girls soccer tournament. The teams had first-round contests on Tuesday night. The top three placers in the eight-team tournament advance to state.

Slowpitch softball

The state slowpitch softball tournament field is set, and it all begins Friday at the Gateway Sports Complex in Yakima.

The two-day event is broken up into two tournaments: Class 4A, and Class 3A-2A.

In the 4A event, Chiawana will enter play as the top seed in the field.

The Riverhawks are 17-1 and have the top Ratings Percentage Index at .692.

Chiawana will open the eight-team tournament at noon Friday against Battle Ground (8-3-2).

Meanwhile, both Hermiston and Walla Walla are among the eight teams that have qualified for the 3A-2A tournament.

Both teams will open play at 10 a.m. Friday, with Hermiston (12-8) playing Lake Washington (8-5), and Wa-Hi (11-8) opening with Kelso (14-0-1).

Championship games for both tournaments are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday.
