DeWitt’s last-second shot gives Chiawana boys opening round victory

Cooper DeWitt’s 3-point shot as time expired gave the host Chiawana Riverhawks boys basketball team a 67-64 victory over the Ferris Saxons in the first round of the District 8 4A tournament.

With the victory, Chiawana (20-1) plays host to Gonzaga Prep on Saturday (time TBA) in a winners bracket semifinal.

Meanwhile, the MCC’s top-seeded girls team, Chiawana, lost to Greater Spokane League No. 4 seed Mead 50-44.

That sends the Riverhawks (18-3) into the losers bracket, and they’ll play host to Walla Walla at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Here is a quick roundup of Wednesday’s 4A games:

4A boys

Game 1, Gonzaga Prep 69, Richland 45: Jacob Schuster had a team-high 11 points for the visiting Bombers, but it wasn’t enough as Gonzaga Prep ran away with the win.

Game 2, Chiawana 67, Ferris 64: Jayden Martinez led the host Riverhawks with 22 points — 17 of them in the first quarter.

Game 3, Walla Walla 68, Mead 61 (OT): The host Blue Devils stayed in the winners bracket by outscoring the Panthers 11-4 in the overtime period.

Junior Michael Cornia led Wa-Hi with 22 points, while Dylan Ashbeck added 17.

Game 4, Central Valley 76, Hanford 42: Hudson Shupe led the visiting Falcons with 17 points, but it wasn’t enough as the GSL’s top-seeded Bears ran away early.

Game 1, Gonzaga Prep 58, Walla Walla 46: Lauryn Bergevin scored a team-high 15 points, but it wasn’t enough as the visiting Blue Devils lost to Gonzaga Prep.

Game 2, Mead 50, Chiawana 44: Talia von Oelhoffen led the host Riverhawks with 29 points and 9 rebounds, but Joelnell Moberg’s 21 points and 7 rebounds was enough for the Panthers to rally late in the game and win.

Game 3, Pasco 57, University 39: Mya Groce scored a game-high 25 points, and Taija Mackey and A’niyah Heavens added 10 each, as the host Bulldogs advanced to the winners bracket semifinals.

Game 4, Central Valley 79, Richland 44: Laura Smith led the visiting Bombers with 14 points, but it wasn’t enough as Richland lost to CV.

2A CWAC boys basketball

Saul Quinones scored a game-high 23 points, and Brock Weinmann added 20 more, as host Prosser held off East Valley of Yakima 86-82 in the second round of the 2A CWAC district boys basketball tournament.

With the victory, Prosser moves into the winners bracket semifinals, and will play top-seeded Toppenish at 4 p.m. Saturday at Central Washington University in Ellensburg.

Prep wrestling

Here’s a look at this weekend’s WIAA state regional tournaments:

Class 4A: Wrestlers from 16 schools, representing the Mid-Columbia Conference, Greater Spokane League and the Greater St. Helens League are battling for four state tournament berths per weight class.

The two-day tournament, set for Mead High School in Spokane, begins at 3:30 p.m. Friday, while the championships are scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday.

Class 3A: The MCC, GSL and South Sound meet at Rogers High in Spokane on Saturday only, battling for four state berths per weight class. The tournament starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, with placing matches beginning at 3 p.m., and championships for each weight class to start soon after.

Class 2A: Wrestlers from the Central Washington Athletic Conference and the Great Northern League will gather on Saturday for a one-day regional at East Valley High School in Spokane. The tournament begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, with finals set to begin at 4:30 p.m. The top four in each weight class qualify for state.

Class 1A: Wrestlers from the 13 schools that comprise both the South Central Athletic Conference East and West divisions will battle on Saturday at Granger High School. The top four in each weight class advance to state. First round starts at 11 a.m. Saturday, while the finals should begin at 3:30 p.m.

Girls: Our area’s regional tournament is set for Friday and Saturday at Othello High School, with the top four placers in each weight class qualifying for the state tournament in Tacoma on Feb. 21-22. Wrestling starts Friday at 5 p.m., and the tournament resumes at 10 a.m. Saturday.

NOTES

Here are some of the top boys heading into regionals from the Tri-Cities: Pasco senior Isaiah Gonzalez enters the weekend at 37-0 at 160 pounds in Class 4A. Chiawana sophomore Isaiah Anderson is 30-1 at 195 pounds, while senior teammate Robby Vaughn is 34-2 at 138, and Tyson Stover is 33-2 at 182. … Othello senior Emily Mendez is 20-0 in the Region 4 Girls’ 120-pound bracket. But she’ll have some competition from Sunnyside freshman Alexxus Ramos at 30-2. … The Asselin sisters of Kennewick are a combined 87-10 this season. Sophomore Aubreyanna Asselin is 30-5 and competing in the 145-pound division, while sophomore Ayanna Asselin is 31-4 in the 155-pound completion. Older sister Alexia Asselin, a junior, is 26-1 at 170 pounds. All three of them won their weight division titles at last week’s sub-regionals. … Two-time defending state champion Taylor Wilson, a junior at Hanford, enters the 100-pound weight class this weekend sporting a 27-2 record.
