Southridge bowler is state champion. Chiawana wrestlers seize 9 division titles

Mid-Columbia athletes brought home a state champion and plenty of district wins last weekend and a set lineup for basketball tournament play.

Here’s a wrap-up of the weekend’s events:

Girls bowling

Nicole Omlor of Southridge finished off her senior season by winning the WIAA state 3A girls bowling individual championship at Narrows Plaza Bowl in University Place.

She had to come from behind to do it, overcoming North Thurston’s Juliauna Gosney in the sixth and final game.

Omlor rolled a 232 in the opener, and held a 9-pin lead over Gosney.

But in the second game, Gosney had a 289, while Omlor finished with a 212. That gave Gosney a 77-pin lead with four games remaining.

Omlor gained 40 pins back in Game 3, out rolling Gosney 214-174; outscored the North Thurston standout 219-206 in Game 4, and 180-176 in Game 5.

Still trailing by 11 pins in the final game, Omlor finished with a 214, while Gosney had another 176, giving the Suns senior the title by 27 pins total.

Evergreen of Vancouver won the team title with 7,590 pins, while Kennewick finished fourth at 7,263.

• In the girls 4A tournament, Pasco finished strong.

The Bulldogs, who went 6-10 in Mid-Columbia Conference regular-season play, had qualified for the state tournament by placing second in the MCC district 4A tournament.

Coached by Theresa Chavez, Pasco caught fire at state and finished with 6,959 after six games of individual games and 14 Baker games. That gave the Bulldogs second place for the second consecutive year.

Only Emerald Ridge had a better pin total Saturday, with 7,320, to win it all.

Chiawana finished fifth out of eight teams with 6,693 pins.

Individually, Hanford’s Suzanne Gelston placed ninth at 1,037 pins.

Pasco’s Yarelly Ramirez was the highest-placing Bulldog at 11th, scoring a 1,025; while Chiawana’s Paige Beck led the Riverhawks with a 15th-place finish at 997 pins.

Samantha Dolan of Emerald Ridge was the individual champion with a 1,186-pin score.
